As one of two divisions of the Naval Undersea Warfare Center, Keyport’s mission is focused on developing and applying advanced technical capabilities to test, evaluate, field, and maintain undersea warfare systems and related defense assets. These advanced technical capabilities directly support the full spectrum of Navy undersea programs. NUWC Keyport is headquartered in the state of Washington on the Puget Sound, about 10 miles west of the city of Seattle and just north of the city of Bremerton. To provide ready support to Fleet operational forces at all major Navy home ports in the Pacific, Keyport also maintains detachments in Southern California and Hawaii, and an operating site in Guam, and an office in Japan. An operating site in Hawthorne, Nevada is used for storage and maintenance of undersea mines. Naval Sea Logistics Center, an echelon five command under Keyport, is located in Pennsylvania and has satellite offices mostly on the East Coast. In addition, Keyport has a presence in Canada in partnership with the Royal Canadian Navy for undersea range operations. Our people frequently travel around the world to support the U.S. Fleet and Allied militaries. Keyport’s technical complexes are recognized national assets and include over 2.3 million square feet of specialized technical facilities and nearly 2000 square nautical miles of undersea ranges. Our highly trained and diverse workforce of engineers, scientists, technicians, and industrial craftsmen are developing, maintaining and providing technical solutions to meet Fleet material and operational readiness needs. As a part of NAVSEA’s world class team of professionals, we are a responsive, effective, and efficient provider to the Navy.

  • Good Morning, Team! Check out the spotlight below on another exemplary NUWC Division, Keyport employee! Joseph Williams, a system lead in the Fleet Readiness Department’s Obsolescence Management Division, is a true lynchpin of the Keyport team, known for his impressive leadership abilities, vast technical expertise and dedication to supporting the Navy. Joseph was born in Roseau, Dominica, and lived there through the end of his middle school years, then moved to Saint Croix in the U.S. Virgin Islands for high school. He was among the first students in his high school’s computer science program, taking on a wide range of projects in programming and robotics and helping convert a storage room into a functional computer lab. This early experience sparked what would become a lifelong interest in computing and information systems. After high school, Joseph joined the Navy and worked as a fire control technician on fast-attack and ballistic missile submarines, serving aboard USS Pennsylvania (SSBN 735), USS Alabama (SSBN 731), USS City of Corpus Christi (SSN 705) and USS Pasadena (SSN 752), among others. He was responsible for overseeing fire control systems, leading technical projects and maintaining electronic weapons systems. Joseph earned multiple degrees while serving in the Navy, including a vocational certificate, an associate degree and a bachelor's degree in information systems from the University of Maryland Global Campus. In 2012, Joseph was among a select group of Sailors who fought the devastating fire aboard USS Miami (SSN 755). At the time, he was serving on Pasadena, which was on the pier next to the Miami. Joseph boarded the Miami, donned firefighting gear and sprang into action. This experience served as a powerful testament to his resilience and ability to lead in a crisis. After 20 years of service, Joseph retired from the Navy as a fire control chief petty officer. In 2022, he became part of Keyport's Obsolescence Management team, starting as a data manager and now leading three critical systems in his current role. Joseph’s coworkers praised his superb communication and leadership skills, extensive knowledge of submarine systems and willingness to mentor others. "Joseph is a team player and is always willing to help others, even taking on collateral duties such as mentorship programs," said one coworker. In addition to his main duties, Joseph co-manages Keyport’s Veterans Employment Program, a role in which he recruits veterans, helps them transition into federal civilian jobs and supports them in various other areas of employment. A lifelong learner, Joseph recently earned a master's degree in cybersecurity from City University in Seattle and plans to pursue a doctorate in data science or machine learning. Outside of work, Joseph enjoys art, history, writing, playing the guitar and piano, and riding and working on motorcycles.

  • Aloha Monday, Team! Check out da kine spotlight on one mo’ NUWC Division, Keyport employee—Mary Aguinaldo-Lavatai, affectionately known as "Auntie Mary" by her colleagues. Mary has been a beacon of warmth and hospitality at our Pacific detachment for an incredible 42 years. She often organizes educational luncheons, volunteers to bless our organizational events, and delights her colleagues with her homemade, ono grinds.   Mary hails from Whitmore Village on the island of Oahu in Hawaii and began her NUWC journey as a clerk typist. Over the past four decades, Mary has shown incredible resilience and adaptability, transitioning from clerk typist to supply clerk, bankcard buyer to transportation coordinator, and now serving as our environmental and safety coordinator.   Mary's teammates commend her for incorporating Hawaiian culture into our events, her sincere care for all people, and her critical role in maintaining a strong relationship between DETPAC and Keyport, ensuring the safety of our employees and our environment.   "From greeting people, to maintaining a safe and environmentally friendly workspace, to hosting regular lunches with the team, Mary is an absolute joy to work with,” said one colleague “Her genuine love for her job, the people, and the command is evident and inspires great respect and affection."   Another longtime colleague shared, "Mary embodies the Aloha spirit—the life force that helps all of us contribute to a better world."   Outside of work, Mary enjoys playing the guitar, singing at church services, crafting wreaths and decorating lauhala baskets, and spending time with her beloved family.   It's an honor to have Mary as a valued member of our team, and we're grateful for her unwavering dedication and the positive impact she has on all of us.

  • Sam De Lano, NUWC Division, Keyport STEM Outreach Coordinator, and his counterpart from Puget Sound Naval Shipyard & Intermediate Maintenance Facility, Erin Guizzetti, attended the second annual Seafood Smoke-Off at Neah Bay Junior/Senior High School Sept. 13. The Manufacturing Industrial Council based out of Seattle administers the state-funded Core Plus Maritime curriculum, and De Lano and Guizzetti were invited to demo their ROV program during the smoke-off. De Lano and Guizzetti engaged with every 6-12th grade student enrolled and present at the school (about 180 students) during seven, 42-minute rotations. Each rotation began with an introduction of NUWC Division, Keyport and PSNS & IMF, respective career and internship opportunities, and an overview of ROVs and their importance to the Navy. Students spent the rest of the time operating ROVs in the pools while attempting the in-water challenges. “The students overall seemed to enjoy the ROVs, and even the rain, though heavy at times, didn’t dissuade them,” said De Lano. Simultaneously, students were preparing and cooking halibut and salmon. Although a public school, the vast majority of students are members of the Makah Tribe and their culture is evident throughout. On Friday they learned how to clean and filet fish, and season and cook the fish in smoker boxes they constructed in shop class. In the afternoon, De Lano and Guizzetti were joined by members of the community, tribal elders and other visitors who tasted and judged the salmon cooked by students. “Everyone was extremely welcoming, and they seemed genuinely appreciative and just really excited about our presence there,” added De Lano. “We’ve already been invited back for an event toward the end of the school year, and the shop teacher has expressed interest in adopting the ROV program. All-in-all, it was a great opportunity for us to make some positive connections with the Neah Bay community and Makah Tribe."

  • Emily Saito, deputy chief technology officer at NUWC Division, Keyport, was honored Monday with a Department of the Navy Civilian Service Achievement Medal. The medal was in recognition of her exemplary performance in her current role from Oct. 2023 through Sept. 2024. Emily began as an electronics engineer but quickly went on to become a key member of Keyport’s command staff as its first rotational Deputy CTO. One of her biggest achievements was a comprehensive assessment of the health of the command’s reverse engineering capability. By identifying areas for improvement, she provided well-informed recommendations that led to additional internal investments in this critical area. Her diligent analysis resulted in increased engagement with key external stakeholders and strengthened the organization's position within the broader research community. In addition to her technical contributions, Emily has been instrumental in fostering partnerships and building a strong community within Keyport. She coordinated a Tech Showcase with the Naval Research Lab, providing a platform for sharing ideas, showcasing research and promoting collaboration. Way to go and well deserved, Emily!
