Electrical Insulation On Power Lines to Prevent Forest Fires! What are your thoughts on the cause of the wildfire in Los Angeles, California? There is substantial evidence suggesting that the fire was triggered by power transmission lines that were toppled and carried by storm winds, igniting Pinus canariensis trees, which are highly flammable. In the Pacific Palisades area, we estimate that the length of power lines capable of causing a wildfire of this scale is around 400 km. One possible solution could be applying a suitable coating to power lines, particularly those near forested areas, to electrically insulate them in case they are knocked down or carried by strong winds. Of course, this insulation would not involve conventional materials like silicone or thermoplastics, which are impractical for such an application. At KFOBIX, we have developed an advanced nanotechnology-based coating that provides electrical insulation while being extremely lightweight, low-cost and highly durable (4-5 years lifespan). This coating can be applied to power lines using the autonomous robots we have already developed—more details on this application method are available on our website. We have already conducted tests on this coating, and the results show that it can provide electrical insulation up to 17.9 kV. I will share these test results in the next post.
