The Texas Civil Rights Project (TCRP) is urgently calling for the reunification of the #HernandezGarcia family, who were tragically separated after their deportation in early February. The family's 10-year-old daughter, a U.S. citizen, was left behind without the medical care she desperately needs to recover from brain cancer. The family's ordeal began on February 4, 2025, when María and Juan Hernandez Garcia, along with five of their six children, were detained by immigration authorities while traveling to Houston for the daughter's medical checkup. Although the parents had made similar trips before without issue, this time, they were arrested for lacking legal documentation and deported to Mexico. Now stranded in Mexico, the family faces immense challenges, with no access to proper healthcare and living in an area known for violence. Advocates are calling on Congress to protect families like the Hernandez Garcias, prevent harmful separations, and allow the family to reunite and access critical care for their daughter. This is not just about one family, but about the broader pattern of family separations and the need for reform. The TCRP urges lawmakers to pass legislation prioritizing family unity and ensuring vulnerable children are not denied care. As we reflect on this heartbreaking situation, it raises an important question: What can we do as a society to prevent such separations and ensure the reunification of families in need? Your thoughts and insights are welcome. #hernandezfamily #texascivilrightspromise #immigrationreform #healthcareforchildren #cw39 #cw39houston https://lnkd.in/g_fuB9BA

Texas has experienced significant population growth, surpassing any other state in the country. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the state's population increased by 562,941 people between July 2023 and July 2024, with Texas now accounting for 16% of the total U.S. population. Among the fastest-growing counties in the state, Kaufman County stands out, growing by 6%, making it the second-fastest-growing county in the country. While many counties saw an increase in population, there were also notable exceptions. Kenedy County, south of Corpus Christi, experienced a population decline of 6%, while Potter County, home to Amarillo, lost the most residents in the one-year period. The Austin metro area continues to drive population growth, with migration accounting for 72.2% of the population increase. While natural change played a significant role in Travis County, migration remains the primary driver of population growth in the region. As the state continues to grapple with its rapid population growth, it raises important questions about the infrastructure and resources needed to support this expansion. How will Texas continue to accommodate its growing population, and what strategies will be put in place to ensure that the state's infrastructure can keep pace with its growth? #texaspopulation https://lnkd.in/gQYgPiJU

An explosion at a substation on Texas Tech University campus has caused power outages at the Texas Tech and the Health Sciences Center, according to a TTU alert. Fortunately, no injuries have been reported. The campus has been closed for spring break, which was originally scheduled to start on Monday, as students were advised to check their emails for additional information. Power remains out on campus, and the Texas Tech University Health Science Center was evacuated as a precaution. Multiple fires were reported at the campus, with smoke and fire coming from multiple manhole covers. The public has been advised to avoid the area. Lubbock Power & Light is working with other agencies to fix the issue as quickly and safely as possible. The evacuation of certain areas on campus is limited to those directly affected by the power outages. The Texas Tech University Health Science Center has been vacated out of caution. https://lnkd.in/gNSGfW9s In celebration of #WomensHistoryMonth, the Houston Police Department (HPD) is hosting a series of events aimed at attracting more women to join their ranks. The initiative is designed to encourage women to pursue a career in law enforcement, an area where they currently make up approximately 18% of officers, surpassing the national average of 14%. Today's Women's Recruiting Event at the Denver Harbor Community Center serves as a platform for women to learn about the career opportunities available, meet women in law enforcement, and hear their inspiring stories. The event will run from 11 AM to 1 PM. Building on the success of today's event, HPD plans to host two additional all-women career fairs on March 20 and 29 at the Harold Preston Southwest Station and the HPD Midwest Station, respectively. These events are a testament to HPD's commitment to increasing diversity within its ranks and fostering a more inclusive workplace. As we celebrate women's contributions to the field of law enforcement, it's essential to ask: What steps can organizations take to increase diversity and inclusion in their workplaces? Your thoughts and insights are welcome. #womenshistorymonth #houstonpolice #careerevent #policecareer #womeninpolicing #CW39 #CW39HOUSTON
