KIC Ventures would like to extend its congratulations to the founding residents of the Harvard Orthopaedic Journal (HOJ), whose vision and collaborative efforts in 1999 have left a lasting impact on the field of orthopaedic surgery. The journal, initially conceived as a platform for the exchange of knowledge between Harvard institutions, has grown into a respected, internationally recognized publication. Today, known as the Orthopaedic Journal at Harvard Medical School (OJHMS), it continues to advance orthopaedic research and education. Dr. Kingsley R. Chin MD MBA, CEO Spine Surgeon Professor Author, CEO and Founder of KIC Ventures, was among the distinguished group of residents selected to spearhead this initiative. Recognizing the potential of the internet at the time, Dr. Chin recommended that the journal establish a website to broaden its reach and make its content more accessible to the global medical community. Dr. Chin was well-positioned for this role, as he was also running an internet company, Meduweb.com, which partnered with Cognate.com, a company founded by two MIT students majoring in computer science. Together, they leveraged Java technology to pioneer distance learning software, a forward-thinking approach that seamlessly integrated with the development of the HOJ’s online presence. As we look back, we celebrate the achievements of the entire group of founders who have gone on to make significant contributions to the field of orthopaedics. Their collaboration and foresight laid the foundation for a journal that continues to thrive and serve as a key resource for orthopaedic surgeons worldwide. How FacetFuse Brought Dr. Kingsley R. Chin Together with Luminary Spine Surgeons Dr. Anthony Yeung and Dr. Hansen Yuan. One of our standout innovations, FacetFuse, has garnered significant recognition as a minimally invasive solution for spine fusion, with over 12,000 successful implants performed by orthopedic spine surgeons and neurosurgeons around the world. The journey of FacetFuse includes notable collaborations with pioneering spine surgeons like Dr. Anthony T. Yeung and Dr. Hansen A. Yuan. In the early 2000s, our founder, Dr. Kingsley R. Chin MD MBA, CEO Spine Surgeon Professor Author, introduced FacetFuse to Dr. Yeung. Recognizing the potential, Dr. Yeung proposed using FacetFuse in conjunction with his revolutionary Yeung Endoscopic Spine System (YESS). Together, they saw how FacetFuse could enhance the minimally invasive approach to spine surgery by allowing for both decompression and percutaneous facet fusion. This collaboration led to the introduction of FacetFuse at Dr. Yeung's YESS cadaver training labs in Arizona, where surgeons were trained on how to effectively use the technology. It was during one of these labs that Dr. Chin met Dr. Hansen A. Yuan. Dr. Yeung and Dr. Yuan proposed a partnership to introduce FacetFuse to the Chinese market through Bonovo Orthopedics, Inc., a company that has been distributing orthopedic products across China for over 15 years. Though Dr. Chin decided not to move forward with the partnership at the time, the meeting highlighted the early recognition of FacetFuse’s groundbreaking potential. Today, Bonovo continues to distribute advanced orthopedic solutions in China, showcasing the lasting connection between these pioneering surgeons and their shared vision for the future of spine care.
