Next time you visit Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium, you will want to see the immersive Hubbard Orangutan Forest! This three-acre exhibit has been inspired by Southeast Asia — giving visitors a first-hand look into the lives of five orangutans and their siamang cousins in their natural habitat. When visitors walk in, they have unobstructed views of the orangutans and can visit the educational spaces for an interactive experience. We were proud to build this new space for the animals and to add another great exhibit for the 2024 Best Zoo in the country!

The team on the Bend North Corridor Design-Build Project has reached an important milestone in helping realign one of the most congested portions of U.S. 97 in Bend, Oregon, and improve a section of U.S. 20. All bridge decks have been placed on the new U.S. 97 on-ramp, and we now have a visual of how the area will look with traffic. Our team has been working on constructing new pedestrian crossings and sidewalks, upgrading bike lanes, adding a new transit stop and creating roundabouts. Because of population growth and both highways being used as primary routes for residents, traffic has significantly increased in the area. Our improvements will help provide traffic congestion relief, improve local and highway traffic safety, reduce traffic volume and speeds, increase freight mobility and improve travel times. Construction is expected to wrap up in December.

The I-15 Tropicana Design-Build Project in Las Vegas is nearing its final stretch, as crews are on track to finishing the project's third phase this fall. Our foundations team on the project recently completed a major milestone, pouring out all drilled shafts greater than 1 meter in diameter. The remaining drilled shafts are expected to be complete by the Fourth of July. The existing Tropicana Ave. bridge was demolished in February, and the new bridge is scheduled for completion this winter. Other improvements include adding HOV ramps, replacing the existing flyover and modifying the signalized intersection and configuration of Dean Martin Drive and Tropicana Ave. Construction is expected to wrap up in 2025.

We're partnering with the University of Maryland, College Park (UMD) to modernize the university's energy system – providing decades of sustainable energy. Today, we reached financial close on the NextGen Energy Program – kicking off the start of a 33-year partnership with UMD. Kiewit, along with partners Plenary Americas and Honeywell, will play a critical role in delivering a sustainable energy system and reducing UMD’s dependency on fossil fuels. The NextGen Energy Program will provide for a more resilient and efficient energy system on campus that will improve energy services and have a significant environmental impact – capable of cutting carbon emissions by 23% and decreasing water consumption by 50%. The NextGen Energy Program is part of UMD's commitment to become fossil-free by 2035. Kiewit is the co-developer, lead engineer and contractor. Construction will begin in July. Giving back to communities is important to our business and people. Over the last few months, two teams of Kiewit employees from nine different parts of the business traveled to Rwanda to participate in international bridge builds with Bridges to Prosperity to construct the Kagusa and Gataba Bridges. The builds included installing towers, cables, swings, decking and other components. The Kagusa Bridge build took two weeks and is the longest suspended bridge built by Kiewit employees this year. The bridge stretches 118 meters (slightly longer than an American football field) and serves 1,625 community members. The Gataba Bridge team recently completed their two week build of an 88-meter suspended bridge serving 4,223 community members, ensuring their safety across the Gikeri River. The last Kiewit team will leave at the end of June and will be working on the 110-meter Rusenyi suspension bridge serving 5,026 community members. Bridges to Prosperity says these bridges help give isolated rural communities safe access to critical resources like health care, education, or employment, particularly when they are cut off by an impassable river. Thank you to our employees for volunteering their time away from their families to help others!

McNally Tunneling Corp., a subsidiary of Kiewit, reached a major milestone on the Shoreline Storage Tunnel Project. After boring over 14,000 feet of tunnel, Avery, the project’s earth pressure balance boring machine, reached the final retrieval shaft. Here are some cool photos from the recent milestone. Avery is a 26-foot diameter, 385-foot-long, tunnel boring machine weighing over 1,350 tons. The Shoreline Storage Tunnel is the first large-diameter, soft-ground tunnel completed for the Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District. This tunnel is part of Project Clean Lake – a program to reduce sewage in local waterways and Lake Erie through tunnel construction and expanding treatment facilities. All of the Project Clean Lake initiatives are expected to be completed in 2036. McNally Tunneling Corp. was also recently awarded the next phase of work for the Project Clean Lake program, which is the Southerly Storage Tunnel Project. Avery will once again be refurbished and utilized to bore the 18,000LF of tunnel on this project.
