KRIRM Graduate Student Nate Edwards has spent his summer internship on King Ranch working on several units and a range management project. Stocking rate is a critical management decision for any ranch. Given the size and plant community diversity of King Ranch, assigning annual stocking rates that sustain range health and facilitate optimal livestock and wildlife habitat is a significant challenge. Nate’s management project involves a comparison of historical grazing records with carrying capacities predicted by remote sensing technology. If remote sensing proves useful, time and effort invested by management personnel can be greatly reduced. #kingranch #ranchmanagement #ranchmanager #krirm #ranching

A stool with three legs is an effective illustration of sustainability; the legs represent the three most common sustainability pillars – environmental, social and economic. Viability of the stool depends on support and involvement of all three legs. Even though sustainability has been a frequent topic of discussion among animal and natural resource stewards and consumers alike, there remains confusion within the industry regarding what sustainability actually involves. In this article, KRIRM Executive Director Rick Machen discusses ranch sustainability and the interrelatedness of the three sustainability "pillars" when it comes to successful management. KRIRM Graduate Student Seb Killpack is spending his summer internship on the Lazy T Ranch WY in Ten Sleep, WY. This historic, family owned and operated ranch began in 1944 with a primary focus on raising horses. In the 1990s, the ranch expanded into the beef industry. Our sincere congratulations to Mr. Tio Kleberg for this very distinguished and well deserved award!
Stephen J. “Tio” Kleberg of Kingsville, Texas, has been selected as the 2024 National Golden Spur recipient for his contributions to the ranching and livestock industries. He will be honored during the National Golden Spur Award Honors on October 5 in Lubbock, Texas. “Tio was a cowboy first and then became a cowman, a horseman and, ultimately, the leader of the agribusiness operations for King Ranch, where he became the face of King Ranch throughout his tenure,” said Jay Evans, who worked for Kleberg at King Ranch and now manages Bridwell Ranches. “I can best describe his character and values by pulling from the cowboy/western culture code, which is summarized as strong faith, honesty, fairness, loyalty, hospitality, a deep respect for the land and its animals and a rock-solid work ethic and being a man of his word.” The National Golden Spur Award is the most prestigious national honor given by the ranching and livestock industries. Presentation of the National Golden Spur Award is a joint annual recognition given by six of the leading state and national ranching and livestock organizations: the American Quarter Horse Association, National Cattlemen's Foundation (National Cattlemen's Beef Association), Ranching Heritage Association (National Ranching Heritage Center), Texas Cattle Feeders Association, Texas Farm Bureau, and Texas & Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association.
