The 2024 State of Computer Science is out, and we’re seeing a lot of great takeaways, encouraging trends, and areas to keep pushing our work forward. Highlights: 🎓 11 states have now passed a computer science graduation requirement: Alabama, Arkansas, Indiana, Louisiana, Nebraska, Nevada, North Carolina, North Dakota, Rhode Island, South Carolina, and Tennessee. 📈 60% of U.S. public high schools are offering foundational computer science courses, but only 6.4% of students took a class last year. Lots of room to grow! 🤑 $88M was allocated for computer science education in 2024 across state budgets. Encouraging to see this kind of investment in CS and AI education. What we're excited about: 🖥 The growing role of AI: AI is revolutionizing computer science classrooms by enabling tools that generate code, debug programs, and even create full applications. Kira is at the forefront of ensuring AI is used thoughtfully in the classroom, improving the learning experience for students and teachers alike. 👨🏫 Preparing teachers for AI: According to surveys conducted by TeachAI and CSTA, 88% of computer science teachers feel they need additional resources and training to effectively teach with and about AI. That's why Kira is developing AI literacy courses for teachers and parents. Stay tuned! 📜 AI policy and guidance: 24 states have released specific AI guidance to help support teachers and students in navigating AI in education. These policies aim to ensure the responsible and effective use of AI, addressing challenges like privacy, bias, and fairness. Kira got to be a part of this initiative by playing a vital role in Louisiana’s AI task force in 2024. Check out the full report to learn more!
