The first Chinook salmon was recently spotted by the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife swimming upstream  of the now demolished J.C. Boyle Dam in the Klamath River basin. This incredible sighting marks a huge win for the Klamath River Renewal Project, restoring fish passage to historic habitat and spawning grounds that were last accessible in 1912. As the lead design partner of Kiewit, we're thrilled to have been involved in this historic project—the largest dam removal and river restoration project in U.S. history. We developed innovative designs for safe dam decommissioning and removal works until the last of the four aging dams was taken down in August 2024, reconnecting over 400 stream-miles of salmon habitat on the Klamath River in southern Oregon and northern California. This is a proud moment for our team and a win for environmental conservation and the many who have contributed to this effort over the last two decades. Senior engineer Kevin Davenport of Knight Piésold Canada recently shared valuable observation-based insights into the complex dynamics of block caving and mine-induced subsidence at the 9th International Mass Mining Conference and Exhibition in Kiruna, Sweden. Kevin’s presentation summarized the observed Block 3 cave propagation and initial subsidence manifestation resulting from ongoing block cave mining at the New Afton Mine in British Columbia, Canada. Experiential learnings and conclusions were shared regarding interrelated block cave and subsidence behaviour, including the use of available monitoring methods for observation-based assessment of cave propagation, interaction with overlying mining areas, and the onset of surface displacements. Findings were presented using illustrative examples from available state-of-the-art monitoring instrumentation and remote sensing techniques employed at the mine. Knight Piésold offers geotechnical engineering, performance monitoring, and instrumentation services for operational mining projects, including those specialized to block caving and mine-induced subsidence applications. Our experience allows us to support mining companies to effectively leverage their monitoring data to inform management of risks and enhance operational efficiency and safety.
