Early Tuesday morning, the 1.6 mile-long Francis Scott Key Bridge partially collapsed into Baltimore’s Patapsco River after a freighter crashed into it. People will handle this tragedy in different ways, for different reasons. The architects out there grieve the fall of the steel-arched bridge, built in the 1970’s and considered an engineering feat at the time. Historians recall the bridge’s namesake, the author of our national anthem, the “Star Spangled Banner.” Most sadly, families grieve their loved ones who died in this accident. Those of us who work in logistics started calculating the added hundreds of miles that trucks will have to drive as they are rerouted. We thought about the gallons of extra gasoline that will be used, the added driving hours that will be accumulated, and the different types of trucks that will have to be recruited that can fit in the tunnels. We know the port in Baltimore that receives and unburdens ships of their loads. We think about the containers that were on that freighter; seen from overhead cameras, the geometry and vivid colors were beautiful in their own way. Video of the crash and collapse can be found everywhere on the internet. It’s horrifying to watch. But it does put things in perspective to see – in slow motion - so much effort, industry, and economy crumble in a matter of seconds, taking with it too many innocent lives.
