Air France and United Airlines have decided to offer free in-flight Wi-Fi using SpaceX’s Starlink, starting in 2025. Air France said it is retrofitting all its aircraft, regional and long-haul, with Starlink. This move comes as a blow to Paris-based Eutelsat’s OneWeb, whose LEO constellation is in the market for airline business. This move reflects the growing trust in Starlink’s informal service guarantee and marks a shift in in-flight connectivity. Both airlines are also following Delta’s lead in providing free internet access, changing the landscape for passengers and airline business models alike. Satellite operators that manage networks above LEO must carefully manage the climb through the debris-heavy region. This can mean processing tens of thousands of conjunction alerts every day. Many satellite operators attended the ITU conference, where one emerging theme was the call for harmonized regulation worldwide. Concerns about growing debris are many, including the human casualty risk of satellite pieces falling back to Earth. And some solutions, like active debris removal, is difficult above 600 km, where atmospheric drag is significantly lower.
