Most buildings are built for people, and most people need water. This terrible fate we’re bound by, trapped in such damp fleshy confines, has been the source of income for plumbers of one kind or another for countless generations. The good news is that plumbers are typically good at their jobs, because the cost of a poor job can be more than leaky pipes. The primary reason why water (depending on where you live) is kept safe while traveling from treatment plants all the way to your house is because the system in place is airtight and moving. Pipes can absolutely degrade, introducing things in the water you don’t want in your fragile body, but this is only half of the equation. If a large enough system isn’t moving water at decent rate, mold can develop, as well as a biofilm that can harbor E.coli and Legionnaire’s Disease. Legionnaire’s Disease is especially worrisome because you don’t catch it from drinking water, but from breathing in water droplets as it evaporates. While most people exposed to this don’t get sick, there is a particular threat to older or immuno-compromised people. As medicine gets better and better, our time in these meat tombs is lengthened even further, so making sure the water’s moving continues as a major concern for plumbers to this day. #funfact #health #safety #diseaseprevention #plumbing

Steeples are a specialty at Kruse. Since our first job 30 years ago, we’ve been dedicated to making this stunning aspect of traditional architecture as durable and dependable as it can be. Because of this, when Clonmel determined to build a new church for their expanding community, they knew exactly who to call. If it’s metal and on a building, we can get that done for you. As well as a beautiful standing seam metal roof on this project, we also custom fabricated downspouts and gutters to make sure this investment can serve the community for generations. #archmetal #church #catholic #newbuild #steeple

Our service in Kansas City is growing fast! Service and maintenance contracts are flowing in, so Andy Mayfield has been brought along to coordinate work for the growing team. As our techs bring the Kruse quality and peace of mind to Kansas City, Andy will handle everything else, from scheduling to billing and everything in between. Andy is more than prepared for his new role, having 13 years of experience as a dispatcher for residential HVAC. While getting his bearings, Andy has admitted the difference between residential and commercial is something he’s getting used to. “Commercial is definitely different. In residential you could get three jobs in the same day, but a job in commercial could be one that lasts three days.” This experience in a faster-paced environment has honed Andy’s workflow, one that applies as Kruse’s Service Coordinator as well. “I’ve always been a process guy. It’s about making sure everything is laid out, so nothing gets forgotten.” This process-minded workstyle will serve Kruse’s Kansas City Service well, as our service techs have been expanding aggressively in recent months. This growth needs to be sustainable, but Andy’s attitude to an expanding team is also well-earned. “You have to learn the customers.” When you know what to expect from the people you work with, you can prepare for what they need better. With his knowledge of the KC market, as well as access to some of Kruse’s finest techs, Kansas City’s most complex mechanical problems can be met with the best solutions. We look forward to seeing the processes Andy develops to grow Kansas City Service on the firmest foundation. Andy may not be one for the limelight, but he’s dedicated to making sure our star techs have the help they need to do their jobs well. “I don’t want to be ‘the guy.’ I just want to be the guy that ‘the guy’ counts on.” #HVAC #Service #KansasCity #Growth #Quality #Systems

You couldn’t ask for a better day to golf! Yesterday we had the joy and honor to host our annual Kruse Golf Tournament. With a record high attendance from some of the biggest names in the industry and Kruse’s finest (and okayest) golfers, we once again donated to a fantastic cause. In partnering with Kansas Children's Foundation, Kruse and our sponsors dedicated $25,000 to helping families across Kansas in the most tragic and financially vulnerable times of their lives. Children diagnoses of cancer and other life-threatening illnesses incur a terrible burden on families, as one or both parents need to step away from work to be with their kids. Kansas Children’s Foundation provides financial assistance to these families, allowing parents to be fully present for their kids during the most difficult fight for their lives. After a gorgeous day of golfing and an excellent meal provided by Crestview Country Club, we heard about this cause, and how the tournament is helping families today. Then, prizes were given and a legendary raffle peaked at signed helmets by the Kansas City Chiefs. Huge thanks to all our sponsors, Crestview Country Club, and everyone who helped to make this day possible so Kansas Children’s Foundation can provide much-needed assistance to families across the state. #GolfTournament #Charity #GoodVibes #lovelyday #kansaschildrensfoundation #Golf

Plumbing and pipefitting prefabrication is moving fast, and no one’s more excited about this than our new fabrication manager Chad McCurdy. This week we caught up with Chad to discuss his experience in fabrication, and his vision for the further development of Kruse’s quickly expanding prefabrication division. After briefly working in service plumbing at a small open shop, Chad learned quickly the distinction between plumbing and pipefitting. Once Chad joined the union in 2011, he placed all his focus on pipefitting. The experience he acquired earned him a position as a fabrication manager for 14 years before joining Kruse. Focusing mostly on welded and threaded pipe during his tenure, Chad saw firsthand how restrained the scope of fabrication was compared to the plumbing and pipefitting in the field. “You hear a lot, ‘well you can’t do that.’ Well, yeah you can, you just need the right tools and an open mind.” This desire to find new applications for the incredible skills our tradesmen hold has been an integral part of Kruse’s growth. When asked what he’s most interested in fabricating at Kruse, Chad immediately said “medical gas,” though talked more generally about hospital applications. “They have everything in a hospital,” he explained. This ranges not just to medical gas for each room, but plumbing, mechanical piping, and refrigerant. By expanding fabrication capabilities in our hospital projects, Kruse gets everything a shop would need to tackle any project in the future. Chad also discussed building mechanical rooms pad-by-pad in the shop, making one of the most difficult aspects in the field for pipefitters into a simpler and safer procedure. Kruse is more than happy to provide the right tools to empower our workers to achieve greater capabilities, and we’re excited to see what Chad’s open mind can accomplish. Our ductwork fabrication is second-to-none, and with Chad McCurdy in a captain’s seat, we’re confident our plumbing and pipefitting fabrication will lock step in quality and efficiency. #plumbing #pipefitting #fabrication #newfaces #growth #growthmindset

By any measure of the word “luck,” whether planetary alignment, the bountiful and wise twin spirits of Earth and Sky, the OSHA Technical Manual, or the beautiful synthesis of all three, walking under ladders is never advised. Whether because it symbolically broke the Holy Trinity like a cobweb as you walked through the triangle, or because any elevated temporary structure is going to be less stable than a permanent structure, these handy tools can also be severe hazards if not handled properly. While it’s deeply unlucky to walk under any ladder because of this, some can be riskier than others. And by “some” I mostly mean Multi-Position ladders. These contraptions, made by minds of metal and wheels, use a ratcheting function so you can make the triangle of the ladder as wide as you want, even extending to a straight line so you can lean it as an extension ladder. The downside of this versatility is that all your weight, and I don’t mean to sound rude but ALL your weight, is resting on two mechanical ratchets that can fail at any time, collapsing the ladder and ruining the day of anyone on or under the devilish contraption. This also means there’s no cross-beam in your triangle, making the ladder all the more tantalizing to mosey under, thereby inviting evil after your face is filled with holy cobweb. While more expensive upfront, it is much safer and more friendly to the earth and sky to just get a separate step ladder and extension ladder for whatever your next ladder-based missions will be. They’ll last longer, and you won’t have to go through the terrifying experience of learning all at once that you need a new ladder because the old one decided it didn’t want to ladder anymore. #funfact #ladders #fridaythe13th #spooky #osha #safety

While much of or work is region specific, radiating from Wichita, Manhattan, or Kansas City, our Hotel department specializes in serving more remote communities. This week, we caught up with Rusty Valentine to talk about his team’s work this last year, and how they continue to raise the standard for construction throughout Kansas. The first thing Rusty talked about is the difference in working for small communities, “We got a really warm welcome in Lyons for our work in the High School. The city knew us from our last visit and knew we were there to do a good job.” Lyons isn’t the only school Hotel has worked on this year. Between Derby Wineteer Elementary and Hays High School coming around the corner, Rusty’s team has been at the tip of the spear, as these cities invest in the most vital aspect of their communities. Hotel’s flagship project this year has been Gross Coliseum at Fort Hays State University, as Kruse introduced a full mechanical system to the historic facility, including full mechanical piping, supplemented with brine chillers. This cutting-edge system utilizes chilling during nighttime so money can be saved throughout the day and the electrical grid has a little less to worry about during FHSU’s biggest events. “I don’t even know where to start, talking about how good those guys are” Rusty said discussing his team, “our guys just get it done.” While the team is known for its high experience and well-seasoned tradespeople, this year has brought in new apprentices that are working well in projects that give them ample opportunity to explore their trade, and are learning quickly to push Kruse’s capabilities even further. #Sheetmetal #plumbing #piping #construction #outoftown
