    On this day in 1955, the USS Saratoga (CV-60) was launched. This ship was one of four Forrestal-class supercarriers built for the U.S. Navy in the 1950s, and was used in conflicts through Operation Desert Storm. The USS Saratoga was decommissioned in 1994.

    On this day in 1985, the Space Shuttle Atlantis launched its successful maiden flight, marking the 21st mission of the Space Shuttle program. STS-51J was a significant milestone as it was the first all-military flight of the Space Shuttle, dedicated to deploying a Department of Defense payload. Growing importance has been placed on the space domain in recent years, notably with the founding of the U.S. Space Force in 2019.

    On this day in 1961, U.S. Navy pilot Forrest S. "Pete" Petersen flew the X-15 at the hypersonic velocity of Mach 5.30 while at over 100k feet of altitude. The X-15 was an experimental American spaceplane operated by the USAF and NASA from 1959 to 1968.
