When it comes to exits, selling too early is better than too late. Aaron Mendes, CEO of PrivacyHawk, puts it this way: eventually, your business will hit a plateau, and that’s when buyers become sharks. The key is grasping how valuation shifts. When your business is growing rapidly, you're valued on revenue growth. But if growth stalls, valuation pivots to EBITDA, which typically results in a lower price. It’s easier to secure a better deal while growth is strong, even if you're not at your peak valuation. Avoid greed. Knowing WHEN to sell is as important as knowing HOW to build. Acquirers only buy companies when they agree on what’s driving value. The catch? If you have to convince them why your company is valuable, you won’t get a fair price. Most founders overestimate their company’s worth because they see a clear path to being acquired for more $$$. Meanwhile, buyers are focused on potential risks.
