  • The police academy is full of new experiences. Officers Wehmeyer and Cameron completed air ambulance training as part of their basic training at KLETC. They learned how to set up a landing zone and communicate effectively with the crew to coordinate landings and patient care. After the class, they put their skills into practice by setting up a landing zone. They also had the opportunity to tour the aircraft and speak with the pilots and nurses.

  • This week we had the privilege of promoting two of our police officers to the rank of Detective. We’d like to share a little bit about each one of them with our KU community. Detective Eli Hodge grew up in Lawrence and is a graduate of Lawrence High School. Eli began his career in law enforcement in 2017 with the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office before joining KUPD in 2019 as a police officer. Eli says that he enjoys working for KU because of the sense of community. He has made many connections with KU community members over the years and has gained their trust so they know they can rely on KUPD when any help is needed. Eli is looking forward to his new role as a detective so that he can continue to provide quality customer service and education to the KU community. Detective Hodge will initially be assigned to the Investigations Section of the Investigations/Support Services Division.

  • This morning, Dakota Wehmeyer took the first steps of her law enforcement career, swearing her oath as an officer with the KU Police Department. Dakota will complete in-house training before attending fourteen weeks of basic training at the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center. Here is what Dakota had to say about becoming a police officer with KUPD: "I spent nearly four years as a Douglas County Dispatcher and had the opportunity to go on several ride-alongs with local agencies I worked with. These experiences inspired me to transition to the other side of the radio. I prefer a hands-on approach to helping people, which I missed while being in dispatch. When choosing an agency to join, I wanted a place that felt like a family—a close-knit group where everyone knew each other and could form strong bonds to enhance teamwork. KUPD fit that description perfectly. An interesting fact about me is that I am a published poet and have been featured in five other poetry books. My own book is titled Burning Bridges."
