Seeking student input on new residence halls, dining facilities and educational spaces is a crucial part of the design process. Five years ago this week, we celebrated the official opening of new Schallenkamp Hall at Emporia State University! We partnered with HTK Architects of Topeka, Kansas to design the 91,000-square-foot residence hall, named after the university's 14th President Kay Schallenkamp. The $19.4 million hall houses 324 students and features four stories and three residential wings, each with a variety of bedroom configurations, lounge areas, corridors and community bathrooms. A learning commons features two music practice rooms, art studio, team study room, classroom, collaboration space and two-story lounges with community kitchens. As students finalize their plans for college and are receiving their fall residence hall assignments, experience tells us that Generation Z students (born between 1997 and 2012) are the most digitally engaged, diverse and well-informed group of students. And while the Gen Z student is highly educated in digital technology and more independent in their learning style, they still value and desire in-person communication and socialization through the concept of being 'alone together.' This unique trait directly impacts the types of spaces and amenities that Gen Z students desire from their residence halls. Construction is underway on a $40 million residence hall at historically Black university Fayetteville State University (FSU), designed by KWK/Jenkins•Peer Architects. The new 78,093 sq. ft., four-story hall will accommodate 383 freshmen and sophomore students in single and double bedrooms, each with a dedicated bathroom. The new hall is expected to open in fall 2025.
