🌐 Understanding Layer 2 (L2) in Relation to Layer 1 (L1): Layer 1 (L1) is the base layer of a blockchain network, responsible for transaction validation, consensus, and overall security. However, as blockchain adoption grows, L1 can face scalability issues, leading to slower transaction times and higher fees. This is where Layer 2 (L2) comes in. 🖊What is Layer 2? Layer 2 refers to a set of protocols built on top of the L1 blockchain to handle transactions more efficiently, while still relying on L1 for security and final settlement. L2 solutions allow for high-speed and low-cost transactions, making blockchain technology more scalable and practical for everyday use. 🖊How It Works: Off-Chain Processing: L2 processes multiple transactions off the main chain, reducing the workload on L1. These transactions are then bundled and submitted back to L1 in a single transaction, which is called Batch Settlements, preserving the security of L1. Since fewer transactions need to be verified on L1, users experience faster speeds and lower fees. 🖊Examples of L2 Solutions: 💚State Channels: A direct channel between users where multiple transactions can occur off-chain. Only the final state is recorded on L1, reducing on-chain transactions. Example: Raiden Network on Ethereum. 💚Rollups: These are further categorized into Optimistic Rollups and Zero-Knowledge (ZK) Rollups: - Optimistic Rollups: Assume transactions are valid by default, allowing faster processing. If any fraud is suspected, a challenge can be raised, and the transaction is re-verified on L1. Example: Optimism. - ZK Rollups: Use zero-knowledge proofs to validate transactions off-chain, then post proofs to L1. They are more efficient but often more complex to implement. Example: zkSync. 💚Plasma Chains: Independent blockchains that periodically submit a summary of their transactions to L1 for security.
