Our CEO, Wendy Butts, joined the Chair of the White House Council on Environmental Quality, Brenda Mallory, for a site visit at Bethune Middle School, where we are working with LA Sanitation & Environment to plant trees. Our work at Bethune Middle School is part of a larger project to plant 580 trees using funding provided by the Inflation Reduction Act through the U.S. Forest Service and granted to the City of LA. We discussed with the Chair the importance of the Corps and our mission to create green career pathways for young adults and promote climate resiliency. Thank you, USC Dornsife Public Exchange, for these awesome pictures of this important meeting for the community #WhiteHouse #ClimateResilience #TreePlanting

Did you know that the LA Conservation Corps has After School Program locations across the city of Los Angeles? Last fiscal year, 4,614 students participated in LA Conservation Corps After School programs. Today, we want to shine a light on Advancing Equity: Lights On Afterschool illuminates the vital role of expanded learning programs in leveling the playing field. Traditionally, these programs have served economically disadvantaged students and provided crucial additional learning time. By significantly extending the school calendar, we ensure that students who are traditionally left behind can catch up and receive the same enrichment opportunities as their peers, bridging a critical gap in access and resources.

Did you see us in the Los Angeles Times? Los Angeles Times staff writer Jeanette Marantos visited the Commonwealth Nursery and interviewed our Nursery Manager Amanda Bashir Chaves and the Executive Director of City Plants, Carlos Campero. She covered the history of the nursery and ongoing projects to expand our urban tree canopy here in Los Angeles, including how to receive free trees through City Plants. Last week’s AmeriCorps YouthBuild Service Learning Exchange at Compton Creek Natural Park was a huge success! A group of our Corpsmembers from across Los Angeles County is participating in forklift training at our Northeast LA site. This training ends with an industry-recognized certification that opens doors to a variety of career pathways for our Corpsmembers. They started in the classroom, and now they’re applying the skills they learned. Keep up the great work! #JobTraining #Forklift #LocalCorpsStrength

Our East Valley Hire LA Corpsmembers, who participate in our food rescue and compost projects, enjoyed a field trip to Sunshine Canyon Landfill in Sylmar. They learned about the negative environmental impact of food waste in landfills and how programs like ours help reduce CO2 emissions. They also participated in a Q&A with LA Sanitation & Environment to learn about employment opportunities in sanitation and how their experience at the Corps can help them qualify for those positions. Our food rescue and compost projects are part of a state-funded effort through the #CaliforniansForAll grant. Thank you, California Volunteers, Office of the Governor! #Landfill #Sanitation #Compost
