Nutrition needs increase when your body is trying to heal a wound. In fact, nutritional status is the single most important reversible factor contributing to wound healing. ➡ Protein is important for healing pressure injuries. It's a good idea to check protein levels for patients with wounds. According to the National Pressure Injury Advisory Panel (NPIAP) 2019 guidelines, provide 1.2 to 1.5 g protein/kg body weight/ day for adults with a pressure injury who are malnourished or at risk of malnutrition. ➡ Caloric needs increase. Provide 30 to 35 kcalories/kg body weight/ day for adults with a pressure injury who are malnourished or at risk of malnutrition, according to NPIAP 2019 guidelines. ➡ Vitamin C is important for collagen production, which provides strength and stability. ➡ Zinc assists with collagen and protein synthesis. #nutrition #woundhealing #healthcare #NPIAP #woundwednesday

Did you know that in Idaho, F tag 812 (42 CFR 483.61(i) food safety requirements) has made the top 5 list of most common citations? Unfortunately, citations related to food storage and the kitchen typically end up at a substandard quality of care level due to the many residents with the potential to be affected. 42 CFR 483.61(i)(1-2) requires the facility: ✔ Store food appropriately - inspect food items upon arrival for safe transport and quality. Keep track of when to discard perishable foods, covering food items, labeling and dating all foods as indicated. Refrigerator temperature maintained at 41 degrees or below. Freezer must keep frozen foods solid. ✔ Dry food storage - keep food off the floor. Rotate supplies, manage receipt and storage of dry food. Do not serve expired food. ✔ Safe food preparation - follow infection control practices, no cross contamination. Be mindful of holding temps, thawing, reheating, cooling, and utilization of unpasteurized eggs. Staff following infection control practices and wearing hear nets if applicable, hand hygiene, gloves, etc. ✔ Food distribution - must have a system for distributing food to residents while ensuring food remains at the proper temperature and out of the Danger Zone. Food safety requires consistent temperature control from the time food leaves the kitchen to distribution. ✔ Washing/Sanitizing - temperature ranges, follow manufacturers guidance. Cleaning fixed equipment. ✔ Cleanliness/kitchen observation - the kitchen needs to be clean. Dust on lights that hang over plates or trays, crumbs on cups that are supposed to be clean, recipes being followed, outdated food items (spices are often overlooked). Residents look forward to their meals. Let's do all we can to provide a great experience for them! Look at your kitchen and dining process! #ftagfriday #foodprocurement #CLNC

  • I’m sure by now most all of us have heard about the Iowa nurse who has been criminally charged for failing to clear the airway of a nursing home resident who later died. Many of us have probably read the article, and a few of us, me included, have pulled the 2567 to review the state survey agency’s findings. Many questions come to mind when reviewing the articles and the statement of deficiencies. “How did this happen” may be the first one on your mind. How does a nurse go against the aides’ multiple requests to suction the resident? Why did this nurse tell state surveyors that she was told she didn’t have to do anything with his tracheostomy? Was there another nurse on shift at that time? What is the process for verification of code status? Was this an agency nurse? The biggest question I have is surrounding something we as nurse leaders have been talking about for years now – competencies. Was this LPN even trained and deemed competent to provide the necessary tracheostomy care to this patient? Going out on a limb here, but I interpret her statement of being told she wouldn’t have to do anything with the tracheostomy as acknowledgement that administration knew that a) she wasn’t trained to perform this level of care or b) she wasn’t comfortable providing this level of care. As a certified legal nurse consultant, I would be asking for proof of competencies related to tracheostomy care not only on the LPN involved in this case, but all other nursing staff that currently work, or worked during that time period in 2023. That would only be the beginning. #CLNC #legalnurse #healthcare #education #comptency #citation

  • ☑️ Feedback Friday! Let’s talk about feedback or constructive criticism. 🟣Feedback is information about a product or a persons performance of a task that is used as a basis for improvement. 🟣Feedback is not meant to be negative, although for many people it can be. 🟣It isn’t easy to receive feedback, but it can also be just as hard to give it. 🟣I challenge you to take 1, 2, or 3 things out of the feedback you receive, take it to heart and apply it. Do not shy away from it. Embrace it. 🟣Opportunities arise and doors stay open when you stay POSITIVE about the feedback you are receiving! Happy Friday!! ✨✨
