How much of an impact can backsplash have on a space? Two of our designers, Juli and Emily, answer that question in one of our recent videos. They take a detailed look at several different style of backsplashes and break down why design choices were made, and how that relates to the functionality and feel of the projects. Do You Charge the "Lake Oswego Tax"? We recently had a client ask me if we charge the "Lake Oswego tax" referring to companies that charge more when they work in higher end neighborhoods because they think the client can afford to pay more. This is unethical. The company doing this is basing their pricing on how much they can take advantage of someone, not what the work is worth. There are home improvement companies whose entire sales process is built on marking up a project 2 or 3x what it actually costs them, then discounting it until the client agrees to pay--especially companies with a single-meeting sales process. This is a massive problem. It takes advantage of people and undermines the company's trustworthiness. If a company is giving someone a better price than someone else for the same thing-they are overcharging someone. So what's a better approach? Create a culture that supports honesty and a pricing structure that allows the company to make the right profit without changing it based on the value of the service, not whether you think you can take advantage of someone. We don't allow our team to change the margin on a project like these types of companies do. Instead, we are advisors to our clients. We help them understand how to maximize their dollar and spend the right amount on the right project--whatever their budget. It's time the entire industry let these dishonest used-car sales techniques die. This is part of what gives contractors a bad name. Have you come across practices like these in construction? Or even worked at a place that did this? I'd love to hear your experiences.

Why not design your kitchen to work for you? With less upper cabinet storage, our client's opted to store their dish ware in a drawer rather than an upper cabinet. Soft close features mean no slamming and risk of dish damage, and they’re stored at a comfortable height for all. This is a great example of how working with designers can help maximize every part of your remodel! What are your thoughts? Want to see the full walkthrough? Find it here: https://lnkd.in/g99czMQE

Do election years affect remodeling costs? While political seasons might seem like a big factor, our latest article reveals that economic stability, disposable income, and major events (like the 2008 recession and 2020 pandemic) play a larger role. The article can be found here, and on our Learning Center. Demo is done, so what comes next? Our next video in our From Start to Finish Series covers the Rough-In Walkthrough. Steve walks us through a couple of the things discussed during this specific walkthrough. What’s a Rough-In Walkthrough? Think of it as laying the groundwork for your remodel. The term “rough-in” refers to the work that must be done before installing finishes. It includes foundation work, framing, electrical, plumbing, and HVAC. Once your roof is complete, you’ll do a walk-through with your build team and an inspector. Catch the full video over on our YouTube: https://lnkd.in/gaBAYy-y
