The Land Trust is collaborating with the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, California Department of Fish & Wildlife, Caltrans Region 5, and the Santa Cruz County RCD to facilitate recovery of the rare and endangered Santa Cruz long-toed salamander. The recent protection of 158 acres in the northern range of the species is the first step toward restoring connectivity and allowing for the interbreeding between subpopulations that is necessary for genetic diversity, species resilience, and recovery. This land is now protected and will be managed in perpetuity for the benefit of the SCLTS and other wildlife. Learn more: https://lnkd.in/gN2WugHX

The Land Trust has protected 247 acres at Beach Ranch—where the Pajaro River meets the Pacific Ocean—to create a resilient physical landscape that protects prime farmland and buffers the surrounding at-risk community from some of the worst impacts of climate disruption. We are grateful to The Conservation Fund, The Nature Conservancy, The State Coastal Conservancy, Wildlife Conservation Board, and the Department of Conservation. We couldn't have done it without these partners and the support of our generous members. Not only has the land been fully protected, a grant from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration will provide the Land Trust with $6M to begin restoration work. The Land Trust, along with 20 partners from across Monterey Bay, just made history! Our collaboration – led by the California Marine Sanctuary Foundation – was awarded a grant of over $71M as part of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Climate Resilience Regional Challenge. The project will address the highest priority climate risks for California’s Monterey Bay region. It was the ONLY project that the Resilience Regional Challenge funded in California. The Land Trust will receive $6M that will provide funding for Beach Ranch restoration and the application of the strategic land retirement approach being piloted at Beach Ranch to other nearby properties. This was among the top project-specific awards in the collaborative. By awarding this funding, NOAA is clearly recognizing that our coastal habitat restoration work at Beach Ranch is a project of national significance!
