On August 29, 1971, the North Shore Jewish Center proudly opened its new synagogue building in Port Jefferson Station. The congregation, established in 1947, had been using an old synagogue in Setauket built in 1896. To honor this transition, a procession was held, with the Torahs being walked 2.5 miles from the old synagogue to the new one. Our architecture firm was honored with the Silver Archi Award by the American Institute of Architects for the design of the new North Shore Jewish Center synagogue. After the congregation moved, the original building was sold to Setauket United Methodist Church, which named it Shalom Hall. Thank you to Brad Kolodny for highlighting our legacy in Long Island Jewish history! #Architecture #Legacy
