Did you know that for many Indigenous Peoples in the United States, canoes and their paddles carry deep symbolic meanings? 🛶 Coastal tribes relied on canoes as their primary mode of transportation, while plateau tribes used them to navigate rivers. 🛶 Canoes, used to travel between tribes for events, games, and ceremonies, symbolize the connection and unity between tribal communities. 🛶 Canoes that held significance were often carved or painted with a family crest on the prow, honoring the importance of family and heritage. 🛶 As a testament to human ingenuity, the canoe represents the power of cultural innovation and progress. This Indigenous Peoples' Day, we honor the rich history, culture, and teachings of Indigenous communities while acknowledging the injustices they have endured. We are grateful for the invaluable contributions Indigenous peoples have made to our nation. At Language Tree Online, culturally relevant pedagogy is a cornerstone of our curriculum. October is Principal Appreciation Month, and next week it overlaps with the Week of the School Administrator 2024! How will you celebrate the amazing leaders who listen, support, and guide you throughout the school year? Here are a few ideas to show your appreciation: 🏫 Encourage your students to create personalized cards with thoughtful notes (in English or their native language) and use them to decorate the principal’s office door. 🏫 Give them a shoutout on your school’s social media pages and website, highlighting their contributions and sharing success stories. 🏫 Organize a special breakfast, brunch, or luncheon with the PTO, inviting families to join in (bonus points for a potluck that celebrates cultural diversity!). At Language Tree Online, we are privileged to work with dedicated leaders across the country every day. We want to express our sincere gratitude to all of you who partner with us to enhance the success of teachers and students in the 2024-25 school year. Boost your classroom energy and focus with stretch breaks! Regular movement breaks can improve on-task behavior, attention, memory, and overall cognitive function. Short, dynamic activities woven into the school day keep students engaged and ready to learn. Plus, they create a more active and stimulating learning environment that helps students absorb information better. Here’s a simple stretch break you can try in class, no extra space required: Head & Neck Stretch 1. Look over each shoulder, left to right. Hold for 5 seconds. 2. Try the "Tick-Tock" Neck Stretch: Gently tilt your neck left, then right. 3. Place your hand over the opposite ear, applying light pressure. Hold for 5 seconds on each side. 4. Slowly roll your neck in a full circle—forward, sideways, and back. 5. Repeat! You can do this either sitting or standing. At Language Tree Online, we offer a standards-based hybrid ELD curriculum that includes not just online lessons and assessments but also practical tips for improving classroom dynamics. Paraprofessionals bring essential skills to English language development classrooms, such as providing appropriate scaffolding for English learners and helping ELD/ESL teachers manage a class of students with varying proficiency levels. Here are four tips to help ELD teachers coordinate and work effectively with their paraprofessionals: 🤝 Set up a meeting at the beginning of the school year to discuss expectations for their support in the classroom. Then, establish a regular cadence for joint planning and preparation throughout the school year. 🤝 Define paraprofessional support during whole-class instructional periods. Decide whether targeted support should be given during instruction or breaks. Note that extra support is often needed for newcomers, SLIFE (Students with Limited or Interrupted Formal Education), and other students struggling with English language acquisition. 🤝 During small group instruction (SGI), while the ELD teacher focuses on students needing the most support, have the paraprofessional guide more advanced groups and check in with students working independently or in pairs. 🤝 To support social and emotional development, utilize your paraprofessional as another set of “eyes and ears” in the classroom. If they notice issues related to trauma, bullying, nutrition, clothing, or hygiene, ask them to bring these concerns to the attention of school resources for help and support. Language Tree Online offers designated ELD resources to support multi-level classrooms with appropriate support for SLIFE newcomers and long-term English learners. The standards-based hybrid ELD curriculum was specially designed for English learners in grades 6-12.  Learn more: https://bit.ly/4dgzACN #languagetreeonline #edchat #MLLs #ELs #edleaders #ELLchat #learnEnglish

It’s no surprise that the majority of the nation’s English learners are of Hispanic descent. Many schools nationwide have made significant gains in recognizing their diverse Hispanic English learner population. While we celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, let’s look at some ways you can enhance advocacy for English learners with Latino heritage at your school: 🇲🇽 Celebrate Hispanic heritage and language as part of the school culture in a more consistent way, not only during its dedicated “month” 🇨🇺 Encourage school leaders to recruit and retain Latino teachers and administrators who can help support and represent this growing body of students in schools across the country 🇬🇹 Advocate for more bilingual programming in schools and equip ELD/ESOL teachers with appropriate curricular resources to teach English language acquisition properly in school 🇪🇸 Push for more staff development training on culturally responsive teaching and strategies for all educators that will uplift English learners’ academic growth in core content areas Culturally-relevant pedagogy is an important aspect of the Language Tree Online curriculum. A multi-level ESL/ELD class in secondary school can be daunting for even the most seasoned educators. In many cases, ELP formative assessments do not provide enough granular information about the areas where each student needs more support. Here are some tips to help better prepare and manage time to ensure all your students are being met at their levels: ✅  First, use a reliable and granular diagnostic language assessment to determine what they currently know and which language skill areas your students need the most support. ✅  Organize your students into homogeneous groups based on the diagnostic assessment and the proficiency level indicated by state-standardized ELP tests.  ✅  Differentiate instruction by providing more scaffolding and support for your beginner-level English learners while giving more opportunities for independent work (including writing practice) for your more advanced English learners. Consider how much time you plan to spend in your small groups, what types of SGI activities to work on, and which language skill areas can be addressed as a whole class. ✅  Have age-appropriate and culturally relevant resources and materials readily available for students working independently or in pairs.   ✅  Track student progress as they work independently and intervene with support when needed. Language Tree Online offers a standards-based hybrid ELD curriculum with all the resources teachers need to effectively manage a multi-level middle and high school English language development classroom. It includes entry/exit assessments, teacher-led lesson plans for in-class instruction, and online lessons for all proficiency levels with opportunities for more practice. Newcomer students enter our classrooms with varying levels of proficiency. Some students may need more targeted support if they have received limited or interrupted education in their home countries or if their native language is non-alphabetic. Here are some helpful tips for teaching Newcomers with little-to-no transferable language skills: -Students at this stage of language proficiency benefit from as much direct teacher interaction and instruction as possible. While this may be difficult in a mixed-level classroom, carving out time for small group or 1:1 interaction with Newcomer students is critical. Consider having more advanced learners work on a self-paced program to free up your time. -In General Ed, phonics and phonological awareness become a minimal part of the educational landscape after grade 4. However, students who arrive after the elementary school year still need to learn these foundational literacy skills to read and write fluently. The challenge is to find materials that respect the dignity of secondary-aged students and not just use tools designed for children. -If your students’ L1 is non-alphabetic, such as Chinese, Arabic, or Khmer, students may need extra practice in reading direction (top-to-bottom, left-to-right) and letter-sound recognition. For speakers of alphabet-based languages such as Spanish or Portuguese, spend more time in the areas with differences between their L1 and English, but be sure to highlight cognates.  To support middle and high school Newcomers, Language Tree Online offers a Newcomers curriculum appropriate for students with limited transferable skills.  The Newcomers program includes highly scaffolded teacher-led resources for language skills development along with tools to support acculturation and vocabulary building. Concepts such as phonics and phonological awareness are taught in a relevant and age-appropriate way to keep students engaged.
