Most college search guidance is about identifying a good-fit school that meets the student’s general criteria, such as location, size, and academic and social opportunities. These criteria are objective and concrete factors and independent of any given student. I’ve developed the concept of Deep-Fit™ through my decades of experience supporting college students. With Deep-Fit, choosing a school isn't about chasing prestige, US News and World Report rankings, or fit to expected obvious factors. These factors are important to consider, of course, but Deep-Fit is more than this. After all, two schools with similar size, location, and academic and social opportunities are not the same, and a student might have vastly different experiences at them. A Deep-Fit college is a good-fit college where a student will have the opportunity to have positive, impactful experiences, meet their specific academic and personal goals, thrive, and lay the foundation for a successful life—to create their future. I’ve learned the critical role of confidence and agency in a student’s success in college and beyond through my three decades of supporting and educating college students. My recent article shares how Lantern College Counseling, LLC’s Deep-Fit™ college search process empowers students by centering their perspective and supporting them to have an active voice and role. We challenge our students to dream big, envision their future, see what they can create for themselves, and then, most importantly, equip them with the tools to do so. Through this experience, students gain confidence and learn to be active agents in building their college future. As Lantern student Henry shares, “I have found a very good choice for myself.” After creating their college future through our Deep-Fit process, students are strongly positioned to keep creating their future while in college because they take the skills, confidence, and sense of agency - the steps and practices we’ve helped them develop through our work - to college. Further, when students make their college choice, they are positioned to keep creating their future in college because they choose a Deep-Fit school that will empower them. Please be in touch at jennifer@lanterncollege.com if you'd like to learn more about how we support student to find Deep-Fit colleges where they will thrive.

Yes! As a dean at Tufts University (and before Tufts, Wellesley College), I always tells parents that my primary relationship is with their child. And, I help my students understand when they can manage a problem on their own vs. seek support from their parents for a problem that is "too big" for them. Our job, as educators, is to support and encourage students to be in charge of their college experience and navigate their time in college intentionally and with agency so they are equipped to live independent adult lives after college! Lantern College Counseling, LLC supports our high school students to develop agency through our Deep-Fit™ college search process. We constantly challenge our high school students to see what they can create for themselves and arm them to do so. Through a Deep-Fit college search, students gain confidence and learn to be active agents in their search. They learn that they can create their future and gain skills and experiences to do so powerfully while in and beyond college. When we help students make their college choice, we know they are positioned to keep creating their future in college because they choose a Deep-Fit school that will likewise empower them.

Dear parent of a college student: please don't ever answer emails or other official school communication that is sent to your student's email address. I know you mean well. But when you answer his emails on his behalf you aren't "advocating" for your student. Rather, you are unintentionally infantilizing the student, preventing him from exercising adult responsibilities. If I were a potential employer interviewing a recent college graduate and I found out his mother monitored his emails and answered on his behalf, I would pass on him. Clearly, he isn't sufficiently independent for adult employment. I want to be clear on this. I'm not saying you shouldn't reach out to a professor or office if there is a problem 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘴𝘵𝘶𝘥𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘩𝘢𝘴 𝘣𝘦𝘦𝘯 𝘶𝘯𝘢𝘣𝘭𝘦 𝘵𝘰 𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘰𝘭𝘷𝘦. Sometimes, that happens. But don't hover over his emails. The best way you can advocate for your student is to advise him as he interacts with professors or offices on campus.

My perspective, based on my three decades supporting students as a Dean on elite college campuses, shared below.
Dean of Academic Advising and Undergraduate Studies, School of Engineering at Tufts University | College Counselor
From the article "colleges are not paying enough attention to the everyday realities of those they let in. ... it is not enough just to get students to campus. It is not just about financial aid. Colleges remain woefully unprepared to support the students who make it in." And "This is no surprise for institutions that have served a painfully homogenous group of people — nearly all white and wealthy — for most of their history. We are only just becoming aware of the gaps in the services that these elite campuses offer." Sadly, these remarks resonate with my experiences supporting students at Tufts and Wellesley College. I have often wished I could do more for my students, like Jerome, who face challenges we, as an institution, are not prepared to help with. As just one example, our financial aid systems provide aid to students for eight full-time semesters (four years). Some students practically need more than eight semesters, potentially with lighter course loads, to make it through their degree, depending on their academic preparation and experiences while in college. In my students' cases, the rigor and sequential nature of an engineering degree is particularly unforgiving. As just one example, funded summer programs delivering key courses with small classes, dedicated faculty, and multi-dimensional support make a difference in keeping students on track. There is so much more that I could say - too much for a LinkedIn post!
