Recycling carbon with biology

About us

Our way of life is built on carbon, from our fuel sources to the materials in our consumer products, but we need a more sustainable way to source it to protect the future of our planet. LanzaTech Global, Inc. is the carbon recycling company transforming waste carbon into sustainable raw materials for everyday products. Using its biorecycling technology, LanzaTech captures carbon-rich gases generated by energy-intensive industries at the source, preventing them from being emitted into the air. LanzaTech then gives that captured carbon a new life as a sustainable replacement for virgin fossil carbon in everything from household cleaners and clothing fibers to packaging and fuels. By partnering with companies across the global supply chain like ArcelorMittal, Zara, H&M Move and Coty, LanzaTech is paving the way for a circular carbon economy.

News! LanzaJet and LanzaTech are teaming up to launch CirculAir™, a breakthrough solution that converts waste, carbon, and renewable power into Sustainable Aviation Fuel (#SAF). This joint offering combines the groundbreaking technologies of LanzaJet and LanzaTech to transform nearly any waste or carbon resource into drop-in SAF.    With CirculAir, we can turn a wide range of waste materials—such as municipal solid waste, agricultural waste, recycled carbon from industrial processes, and even CO2 from the air—into SAF that will reduce aviation emissions by 85% to carbon negative. This process not only meets EU and other national requirements by leveraging waste-based feedstocks, but it also enables countries worldwide to turn their local waste streams into valuable SAF.    CirculAir uses the same feedstocks as other technologies and pathways – Fischer Tropsch, Power-to-Liquids (PtL), Waste-to-Fuels, eFuels – but efficiently processes them to SAF through our ethanol transformation process which is already an ASTM approved pathway.     Nearly any feedstock can now be processed into SAF through CirculAir – offering a clean and efficient process yielding the highest selectivity to SAF available in the market, and flexibility to produce Renewable Diesel with no other by-products.    To learn more about CirculAir, read our press release here: https://lnkd.in/ghED9EJA   #sustainability #circulareconomy #carbon #waste #recycle #ethanol #decarbonization #aviation #SomedayIsNow

Exciting Research Alert! Our latest study, published in Biotechnology for Biofuels, explores how Clostridium autoethanogenum—an acetogenic bacterium—adapts to various hydrogen (H₂) ratios in its feedstock. Our focus? Enhancing carbon capture efficiency, with a spotlight on CO₂ conversion. Special recognition goes to our extraordinary co-first authors, Megan Elliott and Adam Thompson, for their outstanding contributions to this research. Many thanks to our colleagues Lucas Watson MendelsonMichael Martin and LanzaTech co-founder Sean Simpson. We also extend our gratitude to our co-corresponding authors, Robert Hettich and Steve Brown, for their invaluable guidance and support throughout this study. A big shoutout to our collaborative partners at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), including Richard Giannone and Tim Tschaplinski, for their invaluable contributions. 🔍 Key Insights: - Elevated CO₂ Utilization: Deploying higher H₂:CO ratios (up to 11:1) enhances direct CO₂ utilization, attaining up to 75% carbon efficiency in ethanol production. - Consistent WLP Proteins: Despite variations in gas composition, the essential Wood-Ljungdahl pathway (WLP) proteins stay robust. - Post-Translational Modifications: Significant changes, especially in lysine-acetylation, suggest regulatory mechanisms that fine-tune enzymatic activities, optimizing carbon capture. - Metabolomic Shifts: Accumulations of fatty acids and changes in carbon storage are evident, influenced by the differing gas ratios. This groundbreaking research not only unveils the metabolic adaptations of C. autoethanogenum but also paves the way for innovative bioengineering strategies to maximize CO₂ conversion in industrial applications. Grateful for the support from the ARPA-E ECOSynBio Program. Read the full paper here: https://lnkd.in/guUvHRj4 #SustainableTech #CarbonCapture #RenewableEnergy #ORNL #CarbonSmart

Australia is making significant strides in its commitment to Sustainable Aviation Fuel (#SAF) as outlined in the recent Aviation White Paper: Towards 2050. The country’s ambitious agenda to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and develop a robust domestic SAF industry is evident in its continued focus on innovative technologies and partnership. This commitment is backed by A$1.7 billion ($1.15 billion) in funding to accelerate the development of SAF and new feedstocks.    LanzaJet is proud to be part of this momentum, with two key projects announced this year. We’re working with Jet Zero Australia to develop the nation’s first ethanol-to-SAF plant, a pioneering effort that will help establish a new standard for sustainable aviation in Australia. Additionally, our partnership with Wagner Sustainable Fuels will see the deployment of CirculAir™, our joint technology solution with LanzaTech, at their Brisbane SAF Refinery – Australia's first MSW-to-SAF facility – further advancing Australia’s leadership in SAF production.    As Australia takes bold steps towards achieving net-zero emissions by 2050, LanzaJet is committed to supporting these initiatives through our innovative technology and strong collaborations. Our efforts are paving the way for the next generation of aviation, with sustainability at its core—both in Australia and across the globe.    Click on the following link to see how Australia plans on maximizing aviation’s contribution to net zero: https://lnkd.in/gZkw_vKq     #sustainability #fuel #cleanenergy #circulareconomy #netzero #aviation #Australia

The journey from waste to product is not as far as you may think! It truly is amazing to see what LanzaTech's #carbonrecycling technology can achieve. This week, LanzaTech and SEKISUI CHEMICAL announced a Master License Agreement to deploy a commercial scale platform that converts municipal & industrial solid waste into ethanol. Read more about the announcement and MLA here - https://lnkd.in/g-6uvD8B   I was grateful to visit our partnership’s existing Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) facility in Kuji City, Japan this summer and to witness firsthand how we are creating recycled ethanol.   This first-of-a-kind demonstration plant represents a significant opportunity to create #sustainable feedstocks used in the manufacturing of other products from waste materials - all while changing how municipalities address waste issues within their communities. With this MLA, we can take the positive impacts even farther.   There is sufficient carbon locked away in municipal waste to enable local production of everything needed in one’s daily life. According to The World Bank, “With rapid population growth and urbanization, annual [global] waste generation is expected to increase by 70% from 2016 levels to 3.40 billion tons by 2050.” With this technology and collaboration, we can help solve waste challenges in Japan and throughout the world.   Things like this are what keeps me inspired and working toward a #lowcarbon future! Thank you to Toru Ryoso for hosting me and being a great partner.
