Recycling carbon with biology

About us

Our way of life is built on carbon, from our fuel sources to the materials in our consumer products, but we need a more sustainable way to source it to protect the future of our planet. LanzaTech Global, Inc. is the carbon recycling company transforming waste carbon into sustainable raw materials for everyday products. Using its biorecycling technology, LanzaTech captures carbon-rich gases generated by energy-intensive industries at the source, preventing them from being emitted into the air. LanzaTech then gives that captured carbon a new life as a sustainable replacement for virgin fossil carbon in everything from household cleaners and clothing fibers to packaging and fuels. By partnering with companies across the global supply chain like ArcelorMittal, Zara, H&M Move and Coty, LanzaTech is paving the way for a circular carbon economy.

News! LanzaJet and LanzaTech are teaming up to launch CirculAir™, a breakthrough solution that converts waste, carbon, and renewable power into Sustainable Aviation Fuel (#SAF). This joint offering combines the groundbreaking technologies of LanzaJet and LanzaTech to transform nearly any waste or carbon resource into drop-in SAF.    With CirculAir, we can turn a wide range of waste materials—such as municipal solid waste, agricultural waste, recycled carbon from industrial processes, and even CO2 from the air—into SAF that will reduce aviation emissions by 85% to carbon negative. This process not only meets EU and other national requirements by leveraging waste-based feedstocks, but it also enables countries worldwide to turn their local waste streams into valuable SAF.    CirculAir uses the same feedstocks as other technologies and pathways – Fischer Tropsch, Power-to-Liquids (PtL), Waste-to-Fuels, eFuels – but efficiently processes them to SAF through our ethanol transformation process which is already an ASTM approved pathway.     Nearly any feedstock can now be processed into SAF through CirculAir – offering a clean and efficient process yielding the highest selectivity to SAF available in the market, and flexibility to produce Renewable Diesel with no other by-products.    To learn more about CirculAir, read our press release here: https://lnkd.in/ghED9EJA   #sustainability #circulareconomy #carbon #waste #recycle #ethanol #decarbonization #aviation #SomedayIsNow

Even though LanzaTech has successfully surmounted the challenge of reaching commercial scale operations – including our newest production of recycled carbon #ethanol in Belgium just this year! – I spend a lot of time thinking about the startup "Valley of Death." There are so many challenges a technology company must face before it can escape the "Valley of Death" – proof of concept, demo & pilots, commercial partnerships, internal resourcing, cost reductions, project development and financing to name a few. At New York #ClimateWeek last week, I was grateful to listen-in to many presentations on the topic and even join Carl Wolf on Newlab's stage to discuss the pathways clean technology companies must take to commercialize. Interestingly, it seems the reward for achieving commercial scale is to face new and arguably more complex challenges in the next phase: wide-spread adaptation and deployment. One such challenge is known as the #greenpremium, or a higher cost for products that have a lower environmental impact. Consider fuels as an example – how can Sustainable Aviation Fuel compete in a market where the average cost of petroleum-based alternatives is nearly half the price for customers; in which offtake agreements are negotiated without promise of secure regulation that favors those willing to pay a higher price for cleaner product? There is a dire need for steady, long-term policy that considers these factors to enable large-scale deployment of green products. As I reflect on my time at Climate Week, I believe more than ever that clean technology is pivotal in the fight against #climatechange – and that technology cannot win the battle alone.

Vice President M&A and Head of XCarb Innovation Fund at ArcelorMittal

Great to see the latest advancements from LanzaTech, #XCarb Innovation Fund's portfolio company. Their innovative #carbon #recycling technology has now entered the alternative protein market with the launch of LanzaTech Nutritional Protein (LNP), produced directly from CO₂. By leveraging the same biorefinery technology and feedstocks used in their ethanol production, such as in our joint #Steelanol facility, this milestone marks another step toward a more sustainable, circular economy. We’re proud to support LanzaTech as they continue to push the boundaries of carbon recycling.#circularity #xcarbinnovationfund #arcelormittal #carbonrecycling #alternativeprotein #decarbonization

LanzaTech's biorefining platform capabilities now include the primary production of LanzaTech Nutritional Protein (LNP), directly from CO₂, unlocking access to the $1T alt protein market. Producing LNP as a primary product is a natural extension of our commercial platform and builds upon years of experience we have (since 2018) with partners selling certified protein for animal feed. High-quality protein has long been a co-product of our ethanol-producing facilities, and we've leveraged our core capabilities to develop new standalone facilities that produce LNP as a primary product. With same bioreactor and feedstocks as our ethanol-producing operations but with a new microbe, we can mass produce a protein so nutrient-dense that ~1 metric ton can provide the typical complete daily intake of protein for approximately 18,000 people. Suited for human nutrition, animal feed, and pet food, LNP highlights include: - High Protein & Complete Amino Acid Profile: Contains all 20 essential amino acids - Non-Allergenic: Is a safe option for broad consumption - Odorless, Neutral Colored Powder: Is ideal for a wide array of food products - Resource-Efficient: With significantly lower GHG emissions; LNP requires a fraction of the land and water used by conventional protein sources - Resilient, Adaptable Production: LNP can be produced anywhere in the world and mass produced independent of weather extremes, supporting a stable food supply chain around the world Beyond addressing nutrition in the face of a global food crisis and a vulnerable food supply chain, LNP production significantly reduces GHG emissions and minimizing the strain on natural resources compared to traditional protein sources. We’ve been scaling up for over 10 years, and our pilot facility has provided protein product for testing and prototyping across all key application areas. We’ve successfully completed salmon and shrimp feed testing with the The Center for Aquaculture Technologies (CAT), and poultry, pig feed, and pet food testing is underway. Mattson: Innovation for the Food & Beverage Industry has characterized LNP’s nutritional profile and formulatability and prototyped baked goods, dairy alternatives, and protein bars, among other food products. We've also teamed up with the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) to explore LNP production at sea, utilizing CO2 extracted from seawater as part of NRL’s Seawater Carbon Capture Process. Next we're progressing to engineering design for a facility with production capacity of 0.5-1.5 metric TPD, which we expect to be operational in 2026. We're also developing the roadmap for a commercial-scale plant capable of producing 80+ metric tons per day, with a projected in service date during 2028. We remain committed to transforming above-ground carbon into valuable, everyday resources—now including protein. Learn more: https://lnkd.in/gHp8sHvQ

LanzaTech, a specialist in converting carbon emissions from industrial processes into ethanol via a continuous microbial fermentation process, is moving into the food and feed arena with a new product set to reach commercial-scale production in 2028: LanzaTech Nutritional Protein (LNP). The Illinois-based company is best-known for fermenting gases instead of sugars to make ethanol that can be used as a building block to make other products such as PET. Over the years, however, it has also been exploring whether the nutrient-rich bacteria used in its process can be used in the food and feed industry at the end of their productive lives, and has now developed a new bacterial strain that will be dedicated to LNP production using biomass fermentation, chief science officer Dr. Zara Summers told us. “We’ve already sold 25,000 metric tons of certified single cell protein from our current operations as animal feed. The new strain works with our existing technology and is dedicated for LNP production as the primary output. With this protein we are exploring broad food applications, spanning human and animal nutrition.” #foodtech #gasfermentation #biomassfermentation #alternativeprotein #protein AgFunder LanzaTech
