    The CSO should drive the deployment and regular use of data platforms within a biotech organization rather than a distinct engineering lead. This is both because the requirements for the platform should be set by the biological goals of the company and adopting such a platform in practice requires strong scientific leadership to change the daily behavior of researchers. The current standard is to delegate this responsibility to a computational lead who is further removed from the scientific goals of the organization by training and detached from the daily behavior and needs of the end users. This has led to the widespread deployment of bloated, buggy, and often disjointed platforms that are never truly adopted by research teams and take many years and resources to stand up. Thus the research productivity gained from a single collaborative environment for access and exploration of all experimental data over time is simply unrealized for many biotech organizations. These general claims are made from observing the internals of hundreds of biotech companies. CSO is used interchangeably with scientific leadership throughout this essay and describes the person or team that plans drug programs.

    Yesterday we presented the first map of the Omics Solution Provider landscape. Many people asked me for the extra insights so I'll just share them here. Starting with geography! The most represented cities in the dataset were relatively expected, but with a surprising tie for second: 1. San Diego 2. Cambridge, Boston, San Jose 3. South San Francisco For the most represented countries there was a 10x difference between first and second: 1. United States 2. United Kingdom 3. Switzerland And of course the old age discussion: What if we group cities into their metropolitan areas? 1. Bay Area (blessed be thy bay) 2. Boston Area 3. San Diego Area - This dataset is a work in progress, we expect to rapidly update it as we learn more and new companies get started. DM me (or comment) and i'm happy to share it with you.

    You either die a solution provider or you live long enough to see yourself become a drug discovery company. Or do you?... - We present the first comprehensive map of the Omics Solution Provider landscape - As biology advances exponentially, new multi-omic technologies to read, write, and edit cells (genome, proteome, metabolome, or epigenome) emerge every week, rapidly increasing the level of complexity. Techniques that would have made the cover of Nature Biotech ten years ago are now standard in experimental protocols. Skills that once required an entire PhD and postdoc to master are now routinely expected from a first-year research associate. How are we supposed to keep exploring the farthest boundaries of biological possibilities if even the most basic discoveries depend on such complex and rapidly changing multi-omic technologies? Enter biological solutions providers. They play a crucial role in transforming cutting-edge biology into accessible solutions by abstracting these complex but essential tools into services, kits, or instruments. Within Omics, solution providers usually focus on genomics, proteomics, multi-omics, single-cell, or spatial biology. Whether it's a $100 whole genome sequencing, a detailed mapping of the spatial epigenome at single-cell resolution, the sequencing of a million cells simultaneously, or high-throughput cloning of plasmids into bacteria—impossible feats a decade ago—can now be accomplished in just a few hours with the help of Ultima Genomics, AtlasXomics, Fluent Biosciences, or Seqwell, respectively. We wanted to break down the Omics Solution Provider space into a digestible format that anyone can understand. Through numerous conversations with researchers, scientists, academics, and customers, we sought to create a market map. Going into this, we understood that any categories we grouped them into would be reductionist. Some companies fit well into multiple categories, and others don’t fit well into any of them. We did our best to balance usability and accuracy. We also looked into the dataset (DM and I’ll share) and found some really interesting insights. DM me (or comment your email) and i'll share.

    Consumers of kits deserve better! Kits can produce hundreds of GBs of dense text and CSVs. The ideal solution to get insights to via digestible visualizations. But creating and hosting these apps at scale is challenging. Kit providers can now host & deliver unlimited RShiny/Dash apps on Latch!
