As I prepare to embark on my senior year, I've been reflecting on my experience as a John M. Belk Impact Intern with LatinxEd during the 2023-24 academic year. Initially, I assumed I would be performing basic administrative tasks, but I was fortunate to take on much more interesting work. I contributed to fundraising communications, assisted in identifying grant opportunities, etc. However, my favorite tasks aligned with my passion for data and statistics. One of my key contributions was cleaning current and historical data from events and programs such as the Latinx Education Summit, the LatinxEd Fellowship, fundraisers, their service helpline, etc. I compiled statistical reports on important metrics, including demographic and organizational participation, program effectiveness, and attendee growth. A highlight of my internship was my first in-person workday, which was at the 2023 Latinx Education Summit. The event was a vibrant celebration of our diverse cultura Latina and a powerful reminder of the importance of advancing Latinx representation in education. An especially inspiring moment was realizing that everyone at my table was of Honduran descent. It’s rare for me to encounter others from my community –especially in higher education– so this unexpected connection was truly meaningful. The summit is an annual event, and I encourage anyone interested to attend this year on September 13-14! Incredibly grateful to The Hunt Institute, which houses the John M Belk Impact Fellowship, for this opportunity. I am also thankful for the mentorship provided by the Program Coordinator, Jamison Lowery. Lastly, thank you to the LatinxEd Team for taking me in as their intern, especially to my supervisor Douglas Reyes, MPA.

This month, Lucia L., our Program & Curriculum Specialist at LatinxEd, spoke at a press conference(https://lnkd.in/g-TMH5gb) for the Freedom Hill Coalition Represent! Campaign’s official kick-off hosted by CREED (Center for Racial Equity in Education). Alongside partner organizations, the coalition is launching the Represent! campaign (https://lnkd.in/gZzuHFXD) to advocate for “more diverse educators, more equitable curricula and policies, and more responsive policymakers for the benefit of students of color". This campaign will: 1. Advocate for adopting short-term suspension appeal processes 2. Advocate for investment in holistic support services & the elimination of suspensions and expulsions in Pre-K through 3rd grade 3. Gather stories of representation from marginalized communities 4.
