Connected Energy, a portfolio company of the Low Carbon Innovation Fund 2, has teamed up with Altilium, a leading UK clean energy technology firm, to enhance the lifecycle of EV batteries. Connected Energy excels in developing energy storage systems that utilise second-life EV batteries, while Altilium is recognised for its innovative approach to processing end-of-life batteries and transforming scrap into low-carbon cathode active materials (CAM) for use in new batteries. Together, the two companies will establish industry-wide standards for battery repurposing and recycling, adhering to the principles of reuse, repurpose, and recycle. This collaboration will enable Connected Energy to optimize the residual value of batteries at the end of their second life. Meanwhile, Altilium will benefit from increased access to feedstock for its recycling facilities, including the new Teesside refinery (ACT 4). The Teesside plant is expected to recycle batteries from 150,000 EVs per year and produce 30,000 metric tons of CAM, meeting 20% of the UK's projected demand by 2030.
