What would this Dockworkers strike mean for the Construction industry? ➡️ Increased delays in procuring certain material ➡️ Increased inflation to cost of construction due to choked supply to certain material Everyone deserves fair pay. This strike may cause an added major ripple effect in the near future, similar to supply chain issues we’re still dealing with from a few years ago. PS- hope our friends in the Southeast are okay, hang in there 🙏

When you need to revisit your hiring strategy: You've felt you had amazing interviews, follow-ups went great, offer went out, and the candidate backs out... ...and the back-out was a surprise...

TRUE STORY 🏗️ I spoke with a GC a few years back who made an offer to a Candidate who already said no to them... twice, 2 years apart... They put them through interviews and extended offers on all 3 occasions. The third time was brutal, because the GC actually thought they would get the Candidate this time. Based on past events, you can guess the result. 3 years, 3 offers, same candidate, no acceptance...maybe that GC just liked the abuse 🤷 If candidates are not accepting your offers, that may signal issues within your hiring process that need to be addressed ASAP.

Tips for Interviewing Virtually! 🤝 The shift to virtual interviews for convenience is eroding interview etiquette and crucial interpersonal cues. Human communication isn't just about what you say; it's about body language, presence, and connection. Virtual tools such as Zoom / Teams etc. may streamline initial screenings, but can't replace the depth of understanding and connection gained from face-to-face interactions. Candidates who treat virtual interview calls casually, munching on sandwiches 🍔 or taking calls from their trucks 🚚 , risk undermining their first impressions with a leader. Listen, I get it, often you’re on a job site and need to hop on a video in your truck for an interview. Remember it's NOT an internal meeting, treat it like speaking to the Client, it's so important to make a great first impression, connect with the leader in a meaningful way. A few tips to help! Make sure you have a solid internet / Wifi connection. ✔ Set your phone up somewhere stable like a phone holder, rather than holding it and making the person on the other end queasy. ✔ Check sound and light, make sure you are not just a shadow on screen, be sure sun glare is not affecting the camera, that you are in the quietest place you can be with no risk of interruption or loud machinery drowning out your call. ✔ Look presentable and professional! ✔ Make sure you allow enough time. ✔ Understand the job you are discussing and have great questions ready for the leader. ✔ These meetings can be pivotal in your career, treat them as such and you will have greater success, and remember a great interview can mean a higher offer! 💲 💲 💲

Most common career paths of the highest-earners in Construction ⬇️ From the leaders we've interviewed, we've noticed a common career formula: Company 4 as a Project Executive 2-5 Years before next advancement ⬆️ Company 3 as a Senior Project Manager 2-5 Years ⬆️ Company 2 as a Project Manager 3-5 Years ⬆️ Career Start as a Project Engineer/APM 3-5 Years This isn’t set in stone, and Superintendent or Estimating paths follow a similar timeline to advancement. What do you notice though?

Does growth 📈 = security🔒 ? I spoke with a Project Executive a few months ago who shared an interesting perspective on talent planning and resources. All his PM’s and Super’s were assigned to ongoing projects, but no one on the bench (no back-ups available). Instead of having an empty bench, and being at risk when ➡️ people needed time off, ➡️ any emergencies, ➡️ quit (happens all the time, even the 20-YR lifer’s) or even when a new project starts... ...he said ❝We're cash flowing well, so I want to hire backups. Instead of scrambling to hire later on, this will give us more confidence to price upcoming projects more aggressively and keep feeding the engine, while also making sure our team isn’t stretched to thin.❞ Later in the chat he added ❝If you don’t keep growing and aggressively chasing work to keep feeding the engine, the business eventually starts to regress.❞ While it may be a double-edged sword 🗡️ ➡️ sometimes growth = security.
