Labor Day – the first Monday in September -- is an annual celebration of workers and their achievements, originating during one of American labor history’s worst chapters. In the late 1800s, at the height of the Industrial Revolution in the United States, the average American worked 12-hour days and seven-day weeks for a subsistence income. Children 5 and 6 years old worked in mills, factories, and mines, for fractions of adult wages. Labor unions organized strikes and rallies to protest poor conditions and compel employers to renegotiate hours and pay. Many of these events became violent. A “workingmen’s holiday” began to take hold in various states, but the federal government resisted. Then Eugene V. Debs of the Pullman Palace Car Company called a strike, bringing railroad traffic to a standstill. The federal government sent troops to break the strike, resulting in many deaths. Subsequently trying to curry favor with American workers, Congress passed an act to establish Labor Day. It was signed by President Grover Cleveland on June 28, 1894. #LaborDay
