About us

At the Learning Farm, children and families reconnect to the outdoors and discover their connection to local, sustainable food production and shared community meals. Our mission is to give children the various tools, support, motivation, and rewards necessary to become responsible, knowledgeable, and caring citizens. We do this by fostering a better understanding of where food comes from by connecting kids to their rightful place in the production, distribution, and consumption of sustainably farmed and fished locally-produced food. We want them to grow, harvest, cook, and share the great bounty of what grows abundantly nearby to where they live and to do so in a mindful and caring way. The Learning Farm is a tech-forward agriculture and life science learning organization devoted to supporting a deeper understanding of food systems and the natural world for all children around the globe. The Learning Farm is a place where children and their families can immerse themselves in the study of living things, agriculture, and food, as well as have the opportunity to brainstorm and discuss practical solutions to the challenges facing the planet with regard to how we grow food. Children can become more than just consumers when it comes to food. This is where they learn where food comes from: how it’s grown, how the land and plants can be cultivated for optimal nutrition, land and crop sustainability, how fruits and vegetables are harvested and distributed, gleaned and sustainably farmed, how Planet Kid Juice is healthfully processed and put on the market, and most fun of all, how delicious the foods they prepare in the culinary portion of the program are when they are served to their families and new friends they’ve met at the Learning Farm. This is where kids get their hands dirty and explore, and then after lunch, put on lab coats and learn about the chromatography of beverages and the science behind composting. Join Us!

@CharlaPowell @SenatorLeaWebb @NewYorkStateSenate @RoseBarbFarm @FingerLakesReuseCenter Sustainable Finger Lakes. The Learning Farm was honored to receive the New York State Empire Award for our commitment to sustainability and the environment. State Senator Lea Webb led us in a strong and uplifting meditation on community-engaged environmental work at the ceremony last week. It was an incredible experience to hear from others in the State of New York who collaborate unceasingly to make a way for the land, water, and air to be passed to our descendants in ways that are equitable, healthy, and even better than we found them. We salute the other honorees, and all those in our communities, who continue to move the ball forward to protect and make whole the land and people of this region, and indeed the world. We also thank audience member, Charla Powell, the mother of our founder, for her work in encouraging and empowering children’s love of nature through books and outdoor nature play.

@Gayogo̱hó:nǫʼ no Learning Project @IthacaCollege  @Cinemopolis  @Rhize Up Community Farm @The Finger Lakes Environmental Film Festival  (FLEFF) is a festive way to celebrate the strong tradition of environmental activism and conservation spirituality of our region. It was an honor to show some clips from Rhize Up Community Farm’s film “Out Here”. It is a work in progress, telling the story of historical and contemporary Black and Indigenous land sharing projects with interviews from land and food justice activists and farmers from all over. It was so refreshing to see it on the big screen.A huge thank you to Ithaca College professors, Andrew Utterson and Michael Richardson, for organizing a stellar event and carrying on its important legacy in our community, and for centering the work of BIPOC artists. Another huge thank you to Kate Donohue and Christian Caraballo from Cinemopolis for providing the space and A/V support and making this event a beautiful and uniquely Ithacan one.  And my undying gratitude to members of my farming family and film collaborators here in Ithaca: Pete Nunez, Davi Mozie, Michelle Seneca, Jay Smith, Stephen Henhawk, Jeff Wilburn, Chris Knight, and Rochelle Matthews. The RUCF project and the Out Here film could not happen without your amazing work.  Please stay tuned for more updates on the project and film this Summer.  Thank you for your support!

More from the Agroforestry Symposium this past weekend. In future meetings, we will continue to dig into what we scratched the surface on this time. Stay tuned for supportive frameworks for selective thinning, strategic lumber harvesting, conservation easements, land trusts, succession planning, grants and reimbursements, tax abatement, mushrooming, international knowledge exchange and geographic mobility for forest stewards, cooperative building, payment for ecosystem services, food forest creation, plant partnerships and guilds, food systems change, and more.
