  • Congratulations to LAFLA client Hassan on becoming a U.S. citizen! 🎉 It took incredible strength for Hassan to reach this milestone. In his home country of Morocco, he was a doctor—until he was kidnapped and forced into a labor camp in Algeria. Miraculously, Hassan escaped and managed to flee to the United States. But he still didn’t find the freedom he dreamed of. A man who promised him help turned out to be a human trafficker, who forced him to continue performing manual labor under threat of deportation. Hassan managed to escape involuntary servitude for the second time in his life—more determined than ever to find safety and freedom. With LAFLA’s help, he is now a U.S. citizen and his future is secure! 📸: Hassan and LAFLA senior attorney Daliah Setareh at his citizenship ceremony. 📸: Hassan at his citizenship ceremony. We're celebrating all year long! Join us! The staff is the heart of LAFLA - the hardworking women and men who each day come to work to make change for our clients and the communities we are privileged to serve. Generations of lawyers and advocates have passed through our doors creating new and innovative projects Gary Blasi and Barbara Blanco created the Eviction Defense Center in 1980; Michael Ortiz forming the Immigrants' Rights Office in 1984; the API community outreach project was formed and lead by Debra Such and later Special Counsel on Language Justice Joann Lee; the Bill Smith Homeless Veterans' Project (eventually the Veterans Justice Center) was founded in 1999. Hundreds of advocates have changed the lives of our clients using a community lawyering model. Our office are located throughout Los Angeles County. From our humble beginnings as a clinic at USC with 72 law students (the entire third-year class of USC's law school!) to the frontline law firm for low-income people with 243 staff in offices throughout Los Angeles County! We are deeply rooted in the communities we serve. I am humbled to work with such an incredible team and grateful to those who came before us. There's more work to do and we stand ready to serve. 95 years of transformative change. Adelante!

If you're struggling with mental health at work, you're not alone, and you have rights. California and federal laws may protect you from discrimination based on your condition, allow you to request reasonable accommodations, or provide you time off to care for yourself. Everyone deserves to feel respected at work and to access the support they're entitled to. Mental health is a human right! • 🗳️#ElectionDay is less than a month away! Everyone has the right to participate fully and equally in the electoral process. But barriers like a lack of ramps at polling locations, restrictions on voting by mail, and more can limit or even prevent individuals with disabilities from voting. ️ In L.A. County, there are various options available to ensure every voter is given a chance to make their voices heard! Telecommunications Device Services for the Deaf (TDD) and Hard of Hearing, Audio Sample Ballot CDs, Remote Accessible Vote by Mail (RAVBM), and new accessibility models at Vote Centers are available around the county! For more information on voting accessibility in L.A. County visit: https://lnkd.in/gavGPDWa

  • Congratulations to former Legal Aid Foundation of Los Angeles attorney Judge Sergio C. Tapia II on his election to Presiding Judge of the Superior Court of Los Angeles. Since working with LAFLA, Judge Tapia II has held key roles within the Court, the Los Angeles County Public Defender's Office and the Law Offices of the Los Angeles County Alternate Public Defender. He has been a longstanding advocate for accessibility and diversity within the legal profession and a mentor to the next generation of advocates. We are proud to celebrate the many achievements of LAFLA staffers, past and present, and are thankful to have such strong advocates in the LAFLA family!
