* * * Phishing alert: Beware event-related scams! * * * Beware of phishing scams targeting sponsors, speakers, and attendees of conferences and events. These types of scams are not new, but some in our community have reported receiving phishing calls like this recently, so please be on your guard! Watch out for phone calls or emails from people you don't know, claiming to be affiliated with upcoming events or event venues, offering a special discounted conference registration or hotel room rate if you book through them. Excuses for contacting you may include claims that a discounted room block is about to expire or fill up, or a fictitious problem with an existing reservation that you need to resolve. Tech-savvy scammers use publicly available information to manufacture believability, including mentioning dates, locations, others in your LinkedIn network, and even comments you or others have made on LinkedIn. Be wary, use common sense, and protect yourself!
