Ballotpedia and BillTrack50 Release Joint Report on State Legislature Trends and Partisanship Ballotpedia, the encyclopedia of American politics, and BillTrack50, the search engine for democracy, today announced their latest joint project, The State Legislative Decade: State legislatures, partisanship, and enacted legislation from 2011-2024. Would you be surprised to learn that Republican-sponsored bills were enacted more than any other type of legislation? The State Legislative Decade report presents new data and analysis of trends in enacted legislation in all 50 states. The report is based on a dataset of 243,529 bills adopted from January 2011 to May 2024 and includes an analysis of trends in the number of bills adopted in each state and the partisan sponsorship of that legislation. TAKEAWAYS Republican-sponsored bills were enacted more than any other type of legislation. The share of Republican-sponsored legislation in states with Republican trifectas hit a 14-year high in 2023. Bipartisan legislation reached a 12-year low in 2022. Overall, bipartisanship has been trending down but up in states with Democratic trifectas. Democrats had more success passing partisan legislation when in the minority, Republicans were more successful in divided governments. Two states passed more than 1,000 bills per year, while seven passed less than 100. Legislative sessions in 2020 saw 19.5% fewer bills enacted than other even years with complete data in this dataset - demonstrating the impact that COVID had on legislative activity. https://lnkd.in/eXMdYE2h
