If you're new to being an Executive Chef, it's really easy, especially from my experience, to focus on the wrong things. Focus on what's being asked of you first as an Executive Chef. What’s the minimum standard for success? That means really looking at the job description and understanding what the requirements are for you to do your job successfully. Focus on what the people who hire you call success, not what you think it is. What you think is important may very well be important, but focus on the minimum standard first. It's like getting a main course somewhere and the food being cold. Nothing matters if the food's cold. You were hired for a specific reason - whether it’s focusing on an opening, developing systems, recovering after the previous chef, or maybe even carrying on the legacy of the former chef. Begin with the foundational principles of what the job is. Understand those first and then set a clear measurement for your success. Got a great question about execution and wanted to share a framework I use to keep things running smoothly. Here’s my Execution Framework: 1. Iteration: Start with an idea or creation. 2. Feedback: Share the idea with key stakeholders. Gather feedback from important stakeholders (front of the house, best customers, ownership). 3. Filter: Use filters based on the theme of the outlet to make decisions. 4. Implement: Make necessary adjustments based on feedback. Implement changes effectively. 5. Revise: Evaluate what worked and what didn't. Make revisions as needed. 6. Reiterate: Go back to the drawing board and iterate again. This approach keeps execution focused, efficient, and adaptable.
