By now we've all heard there is MASSIVE spending WASTE in healthcare ... most studies suggest 25-33% of the $4.3 TRILLON is just money thrown away! Others argue we could halve our healthcare spend by cutting waste and improving other additional aspects of our system ... given $4.3 Trillion works out to be $12,900 per person, half off seems like a great deal especially given the costs of care are now estimated to sky rocket to $7 Trillion by 2030. So big changes are needed, but what about the low hanging fruit? Just as a thought experiment ... what if we could cut care that the patient doesn't want, and the doctor knows they don't need? Of course, I'm talking about the cost of #SchoolNotes and #WorkNotes to the healthcare system, specifically the ones where the patient isn't coming to actually get care, but "has" to get a note because they missed school or work. These are way more common than you think! These primarily affect the family doctor, urgent care and yes, ER ... but to make the math easy lets just look at urgent care. approx. 15k urgent cares, Ave. $125 per visit, open 360 days a year if just TWO patients per day, per center - come "just to get a note" that is over $1.35 BILLION dollars per YEAR in wasteful care the patient doesn't even want. this is just urgent care, doesn't include all the family doctor offices, telehealth, ER visits, and doesn't include the costs of unneeded tests, procedures and prescriptions ... and I can promise it's more than TWO a day! So, what's the real number? $10 Billion? $100 Billion plus? Quick fix??? ban School notes and Work notes ... you get X number of sick days per year no matter what ... have more? repeat the school year or get fired at work because her is another secrete ... 99% of the time if a patient shows up, we are going to give them the note, so you're increasing the costs of healthcare FOR EVERYONE for no reason! Has anyone seen a study looking at the cost of school notes/work notes specifically???
