The teen smoking rate has been declining for years, but 2024 marks a historic drop in teen smoking and the use of tobacco in general. According to a CDC report, the number of teens using at least one tobacco product declined by 20% to 2.25 million. MUSKEGON, MI — High concentrations of toxic PFAS chemicals found in surface water foam this summer on Muskegon Lake have West Michigan scientists scratching their heads. Surface water foam which began to accumulate along the lake’s southern shoreline this summer has tested at 4,757 parts-per-trillion (ppt) for perfluorooctane sulfonate, or PFOS, according to data from Grand Valley State University. https://lnkd.in/eF-wpjjD

September is dedicated to various cancers, including Hodgkin's lymphoma, leukemia, lymphoma, ovarian cancer, prostate cancer, thyroid cancer, uterine cancer, and childhood cancers. Factors like nutrition, and exercise are associated with lowering risk for adult cancers, while childhood cancers may have different origins, including the potential for environmental exposures. Focusing on the healthy habits like good nutrition and exercise from childhood into adulthood can lower the risk of cancers and chronic illnesses in the future. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) updated recommendations under the Clean Water Act, adding twelve versions of PFAS to the contaminant list along with amphetamine, three cyanotoxins, a flame retardant, and lead. The EPA noted that these are all pollutants that states, territories, and Tribes are recommended to monitor in local freshwater fish. https://lnkd.in/ejMpZEq3

Pancreatic cancer, representing 3% of all cancer cases and 7% of cancer-related deaths in the US, is a serious health concern, as highlighted by the American Cancer Society. In 2024, it's projected that nearly 66,440 Americans will be diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, with a tragic estimate of 51,750 individuals succumbing to the disease in that same timeframe. https://lnkd.in/efUgSPnt

Ozempic and similar medications might reduce the risk of obesity-related cancers more effectively than other types of weight loss and diabetes drugs, according to a new study. A study has revealed that individuals taking Ozempic and other drugs belonging to the class known as glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1) have a reduced risk of being diagnosed with 10 out of 13 cancers associated with obesity. https://lnkd.in/eH54Cbfm
