As Adult Education and Family Literacy Week comes to a close, we are excited to highlight the achievements of one of our adult learners, Esmeralda Deya Martin. Esmeralda attended LPL's citizenship classes at the Marksbury Family Branch and the Northside Branch and successfully passed the citizenship exam on her first attempt! Esmeralda mentioned that LPL’s classes were vital to her success. She appreciated that the classes were in person and found the instructor, Andy, very supportive of everyone's learning. Due to her strong English skills, she was able to help others understand difficult material. Even after passing the exam, Esmeralda continues to return and help in class.   When asked how being a U.S. citizen would impact her family, Esmeralda said the most significant impact has been to “have the protection and rights of this country, full of opportunities, not only for me but especially for my daughters and their future.”    In Mexico, Esmeralda taught middle school for over a decade. Since being sworn in as a U.S. citizen, she has been able to return to the profession. She now works as a paraeducator and substitute teacher.     Esmeralda is excited to exercise her right to vote and to continue learning about the mix of cultures here.   We offer citizenship classes and review sessions in partnership with Kentucky Refugee Ministries every Monday at the Marksbury Family Branch and Wednesday at the Northside Branch. Additionally, we provide online citizenship exam test prep through EBSCOLearning. #AEFLWeek

In 1987, while we were breaking ground on the Central Library and getting our first computer catalog, the American Library Association was launching the first-ever Library Card Sign-up Month campaign. It began in response to then-Secretary of Education William Bennett's call to action, "Let's have a campaign … Every child should obtain a library card and use it." ALA, in partnership with the National Commission on Libraries and Information Science, received an $85,000 grant from Reader's Digest to launch a national campaign. The campaign's first theme was "The Best Gift You'll Ever Give Your Child... A Library Card." Thanks to the grant, Library Card Sign-up Month was promoted on over 500 TV and radio stations and 200 magazines. Today, libraries across the county participate in and celebrate National Library Card Sign-up Month. Explore our Digital Archives by visiting https://lnkd.in/eTtJSX23. Don't have a card? This back-to-school season, we hosted a quarterly professional development day for the English language learning volunteers and staff! We heard from speakers from BCTC, KSU, and LPL who shared their ESOL teaching strategies and best practices for helping learners move toward an intermediate level. Thanks to all the speakers: Yahia Morse from BCTC, Ollie Rashid from KSU, and Raúl Garces from our Marksbury Family Branch! LPL hosts weekly ESOL classes guided by a moderator. Everyone is welcome — ANY native language, ANY English level. View this month's offerings: https://heyor.ca/1d3xSS
