  • It's DAY 2 of the 9th Annual Ann Asparro Run: 7 Marathons in 7 Days! Over the past 8 years, The Ann Asparro Run has raised more than $250,000 for Long Island Alzheimer's & Dementia Center (LIAD), providing crucial respite programs for caregivers. When Jay hits his limits during training, he draws strength from the thought of the daily struggles these caregivers face. "Every day of taking care of a loved one with Alzheimer's or dementia can feel like a marathon for a family caregiver. It's draining. That's why I'm doing this--draining myself every day for seven days--to honor all of the unpaid hours family caregivers provide." This year, Jay is continuing his mission by running seven marathons in seven days. He started yesterday, and will finish with the New York City Marathon on Sunday, November 3rd. See his schedule and his progress on Instagram @jayasparro7. • Jay Asparro has turned his love for his grandmother, Ann Asparro—who lived with Alzheimer's for 8 years before passing April 2019—and his passion for running into a mission to make a difference. Witnessing his grandmother's slow decline and his family's physical and emotional sacrifices was both heartwarming and heartbreaking. In 2016, Jay transformed his feelings of frustration into action, using Ultra Endurance Runs to raise awareness, funds, and support for families affected by Alzheimer’s and Dementia. Over the past 8 years, The Ann Asparro Run has raised $250,000 for the Long Island Alzheimer’s and Dementia Center (LIAD), providing crucial respite care for caregivers. When Jay hits his limits during training, he draws strength from the thought of the caregivers’ daily struggles. This year, Jay will continue his mission by running a marathon (26.2 miles) every day for 7 straight days, beginning Monday, October 28th, and culminating with the NYC Marathon on Sunday, November 3rd. • Today, Long Island Alzheimer’s and Dementia (LIAD) Center held our first Caregiver Transitions program with a vision board workshop led by our Creative Arts Therapist, Brenna Weir. Caregiver Transitions is LIAD's innovative social program for those who have lost a loved one to Alzheimer’s or dementia. This bi-monthly program is a natural extension of our continuum of support for caregivers which already includes our respite services; caregiver support groups; training sessions and legal webinars; and our resource and referral services. Future programs will include yoga, flower arranging, and seminars from professionals in the field of mental health and wellness. LIAD’s Caregiver Transitions Program is made possible by a grant from the Laura B. Vogler Foundation. For more information, please reach out to Emma Fogarty, LIAD's Manager of Caregiver Services, at 516-767-6856.
