Is your "strength" hiding a silent struggle?
June is Men's Mental Health Month, so let's talk about covert depression in men.
What is Covert Depression?
Forget the Hollywood image of depression – crying in a dark room and social withdrawal. Covert depression often disguises itself as anger, frustration, or workaholism.
Men with covert depression might:
✔️Become overly critical and aggressive towards themselves and others.
✔️Channel their sadness into anger and lash out at loved ones.
✔️Fill the void with work or hobbies, neglecting emotional needs.
✔️Minimize their struggles, brushing off concerns with a constant "I'm fine."
Why Does Identifying Covert Depression Matter?
💪This "tough guy" facade can be a double-edged sword. While it might project strength, it isolates men and prevents them from seeking help. The truth is vulnerability isn't weakness, it's the first step to healing.
What can you do?
👺It's time to take off the mask.
❓Tune inward. Are you easily irritated? Do you constantly feel "on edge"?
🧠Challenge your current thoughts and beliefs. Is your inner dialogue filled with negativity? It's okay to ask for help.
🥗Create healthy habits. Exercise, sleep, and nutritious food are crucial for mental well-being.
💚Don't bottle it up. Identify a trusted friend, family member, or therapist you can start to confide in.
And remember, you are not alone.
Millions of men face covert depression. This June, let's redefine strength as the courage to be vulnerable, the resilience to seek help, and the wisdom to prioritize mental well-being.
