  • Is your "strength" hiding a silent struggle? June is Men's Mental Health Month, so let's talk about covert depression in men. What is Covert Depression? Forget the Hollywood image of depression – crying in a dark room and social withdrawal. Covert depression often disguises itself as anger, frustration, or workaholism. Men with covert depression might: ✔️Become overly critical and aggressive towards themselves and others. ✔️Channel their sadness into anger and lash out at loved ones. ✔️Fill the void with work or hobbies, neglecting emotional needs. ✔️Minimize their struggles, brushing off concerns with a constant "I'm fine." Why Does Identifying Covert Depression Matter? 💪This "tough guy" facade can be a double-edged sword. While it might project strength, it isolates men and prevents them from seeking help. The truth is vulnerability isn't weakness, it's the first step to healing. What can you do? 👺It's time to take off the mask. ❓Tune inward. Are you easily irritated? Do you constantly feel "on edge"? 🧠Challenge your current thoughts and beliefs. Is your inner dialogue filled with negativity? It's okay to ask for help. 🥗Create healthy habits. Exercise, sleep, and nutritious food are crucial for mental well-being. 💚Don't bottle it up. Identify a trusted friend, family member, or therapist you can start to confide in. And remember, you are not alone. Millions of men face covert depression. This June, let's redefine strength as the courage to be vulnerable, the resilience to seek help, and the wisdom to prioritize mental well-being. Looking for a resource? I lead a men's support group, and one of the challenges we often face is covert depression. This Men's Mental Health Month, let's talk about the signs men might miss and how to prioritize well-being. • "Say yes to everything!" - Terrible advice for therapists? Not necessarily! To celebrate 11 incredible years of Life Cycles Counseling, welcome to my series on 11 key lessons I've learned on my private practice journey. Lesson 11: Say Yes to Everything I love this lesson. It is all about embracing new opportunities. It was told to me by a graduate professor, and I took this advice to heart. In the beginning, I did say yes to everything. In turn, I’ve gained some valuable experiences. For example, the next time Discovery Channel comes calling to be on their next true crime series, I will know exactly what I do and do not want in my contract. Hello, new wardrobe :) These experiences have helped me: ✍ Refine my expertise 🤝 Expand my network 🧗♀️ Discover new passions What new opportunities are you considering? • Reliance on 1:1 therapy got you feeling stuck in your private practice? Expand your horizons with multiple income streams! To celebrate 11 incredible years of Life Cycles Counseling, welcome to my series on 11 key lessons I've learned on my private practice journey. Lesson 10: Don't Place All Your Eggs in One Basket I love therapy, but as a solopreneur, I’ll only grow so big with 1:1 service. So, I’ve kept my options open over the last 11 years. I’ve been a forensic examiner, a subject expert in court, and a subject expert outside of court. I’ve done evaluations for just about every mental and behavioral addiction. I’ve presented at the United States Army base, and at conferences and the list goes on. The point is, set up your practice to have multiple streams of income. Think outside the therapy box! What skills and experiences could you leverage to create additional income streams? • Feeling stuck on autopilot? Maybe it's time to hit the pause button and reflect. To celebrate 11 incredible years of Life Cycles Counseling, welcome to my series on 11 key lessons I've learned on my private practice journey. Lesson 9: Reflect and Reassess About two years ago, I started doing this almost daily. It really does help to see what you’re passionate about completing and what you’re dead set on pushing off until the next day, week, month, or year. It helps me to see what decisions I’m making freely and what are struggles. Again, it’s great to have a team to help with this. Do you have a regular reflection practice?
