Advocates for Community Health for Community Health (ACH) has named a prestigious award after retiring LifeLong CEO David B. Vliet. The first-ever David B. Vliet Changemaker Award recognizes health professionals dedicated to community health and the promotion of affordable and equitable healthcare access for everyone. “This award honors growing community advocates who are changemakers and have advanced health equity and high-impact health initiatives while providing exceptional patient care,” the organization said in a statement. ACH, for which David is a founding member, is a membership organization for federally qualified health centers that strives to advance the delivery of healthcare to underserved populations and works to achieve health equity for patients and communities in need. Nominees can come from any ACH member health organization, including from within LifeLong. The deadline to submit a nomination is July 26, 2024. 🎉LifeLong Medical Care Turns 48!  The year was 1976, the place, Berkeley, California, where the senior population faced a growing, unmet need for health services. Enter a small group of Gray Panthers, whose members created an innovative solution—a milestone in elder care—the Over 60 Health Center.   LifeLong has come a long way in 48 years, and a lot has changed since 1976. But one thing has stayed the same: consistently meeting the needs of our patients.  We have established countless programs and outreach events to deepen our community roots further. Each year, we provide services to more than 57,000 underserved individuals, many with complex health conditions. LifeLong partners with Alameda County Fathers Corps program in supporting fathers and the health of their families. LifeLong health centers are embracing the principles of Alameda County Fathers Corps, formed to support fathers to be meaningfully engaged with their children and to advocate for father-friendly services. Communications in waiting rooms and exam rooms include more photos of men, and staff have worked to ensure programming is more inclusive of and focused on fathers and father-like figures. Men now have access to support groups and parenting “dadscussions,” and male patient volunteers are reaching out to other men who are LifeLong patients about scheduling health screenings. Fathers, your health matters—not just today, but every day. You are the superheroes in the lives of so many, and your well-being is crucial for you to continue being the amazing role models you are.
