Excited to see BIOSPHERES’ spotlight on our project, LILAS4SOILS! 🌱 As part of the Horizon Europe initiative and coordinated by EIT Food, LILAS4SOILS unites 24+ partners across six countries to combat soil degradation, promote carbon farming, and advance regenerative agriculture. We are aiming to build 85-100 Living Labs, and driving real-world innovation to restore soil health and resilience in Mediterranean and Southern European regions. BIOSPHERES will have a pivotal role in connecting farmers to the Southern France Living Lab and leading the development of Lighthouses to showcase scalable regenerative practices. Their dedication to training and supporting local stakeholders embodies the collaborative spirit needed to tackle soil health challenges. With a €11.5 million budget and 24 partners in 6 countries, the project focuses on addressing soil degradation, promoting carbon farming, and advancing regenerative agricultural practices in Mediterranean and Southern European regions. 🔬 𝗔𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗟𝗜𝗟𝗔𝗦𝟰𝗦𝗢𝗜𝗟𝗦 The project will establish 𝟴𝟱-𝟭𝟬𝟬 𝗟𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗟𝗮𝗯𝘀, where 19 Carbon Farming Practices, such as agroforestry, nutrient management, and peatland restoration, will be tested in real-world conditions. These efforts aim to improve soil health, increase carbon storage, and enhance agricultural resilience in diverse climatic and agricultural contexts. 💡 𝗕𝗶𝗼𝘀𝗽𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲𝘀’ 𝗥𝗼𝗹𝗲 Biospheres connects farmers to the Southern France Living Lab and leads efforts to identify demonstration sites, known as 𝗟𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘂𝘀𝗲𝘀, where successful practices can be showcased and scaled. Our work focuses on training and supporting farmers, technicians, and managers to develop skills and implement regenerative practices suited to their local environments. 🚜 𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗜𝘁 𝗠𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀 With 75% of EU soils currently classified as unhealthy, LILAS4SOILS contributes to a collective effort to restore soil quality, combat climate change, and support sustainable agriculture. 🌍 Shaping the Future of Soil Health and Agriculture 🌱 Yesterday at Expo AgriTech, the LILAS4SOILS partners led a dynamic panel discussion on the critical role of soil health monitoring in designing future agricultural policies and ensuring the reliability of voluntary carbon markets. Key topics included: 🔬 Technical challenges in establishing baselines and standardized sampling protocols. ⚖️ Balancing cost, effort, resources, and time when using state-of-the-art soil sampling methods. 💼 The impact of soil monitoring on farmers' business models and their adoption of sustainable practices. Through its Living Labs, LILAS4SOILS brings together farmers, researchers, and policymakers to tackle these challenges collaboratively. By integrating practical feasibility with scientific rigor, we aim to ensure that best practices inform policies and markets, fostering a more resilient and sustainable agricultural future. Málaga, it’s always a pleasure to see you! This week, the team at EIT Food and I returned to Expo AgriTech to delve into regenerative agriculture and other pressing challenges in the agrifood sector. Together with Amparo de San José Riestra and Felipe Cortines, we focused on the current state of Spanish agriculture 🚜, discussing its challenges and highlighting the incredible work of #Navarra360. A huge thank you to Sonia Pietosi for moderating the roundtable on LILAS4SOILS and its mission to regenerate soils and promote sustainable solutions.
