Championing special needs pets & their people, inspired by Lil BUB's legacy.
About us
At Lil BUB's Big FUND, we're not just another animal welfare organization. Inspired by Lil BUB, the magical space cat who captured hearts around the globe, we've embarked on a mission as unique as BUB herself. Our work transcends traditional animal rescue efforts, focusing on pets and people often left behind. With a special emphasis on special needs pets—the most overlooked and undercared for—we're dedicated to transforming the landscape of animal welfare. Through innovative care systems and collaborative frameworks, we're improving lives, one pet at a time. Our approach is holistic, recognizing the deep bond between pets and their humans. We strive not only to provide for their immediate needs but also to advocate for lasting change in how special needs animals are perceived and supported. Lil BUB was more than a cat; she was a phenomenon that bridged science and magic, teaching us that every life, no matter how small or different, has value. In her spirit, we're working to ensure that every pet, especially those who face the greatest challenges, receives the love and care they deserve. Join us in spreading BUB's magic. Your support enables us to continue our vital work, creating a world where no pet is overlooked, and every human-animal bond is cherished. Donate, collaborate, or share our story, and become part of a movement that's changing lives through the power of love, science, and a little bit of magic.

Today, I wanted to introduce Cosby, who embodies so much of the work we do at the BUB Fund. Cosby is a resilient cat who recently recovered from severe facial fractures after a vehicle accident. He represents the many special needs pets who depend on specialized care and who are at risk of economic euthanasia even when their prognosis is good. Together, we're changing this narrative case by case. By supporting these pets, you’re helping us create lasting change: Advancing Veterinary Care: Treatments for special needs pets push veterinary care forward, benefiting countless animals. Boosting Adoption Rates: As more people understand the unique joy of caring for special needs pets, adoption rates for all animals improve. Promoting Awareness and Empathy: Special needs pets raise awareness about responsible pet ownership and the value of every life, especially those that look different. We are constantly reminded that it's the small actions—made together—that create a real, lasting impact on the lives of pets and their families. Every donation, every shared message, and every hour volunteered adds up to something much larger. Thanks to your dedication and compassion, we’re able to extend a helping hand to those in need. Sharing a few current special needs pets who need your help and support:

I am a believer in the interconnectedness and parallels between our human lives and the lives of our companion animals. It's no surprise to me that special needs pets face truly inaccessible care. The BUB Fund exists to advocate for accessible care for pets whose lives are different; they are worthy of care and their lives have value. I share Gracie and Snowflake's stories as just a few of the many animals we work with and advocate for: https://lnkd.in/g7H8_uym

Argyle was struck by a car and was lucky enough to find his way to a loving person who brought him for needed care. He was on the euthanasia list due to cost of care, not due to his capacity for recovery, which sadly happens to often for special needs pets. I am always interested in ways to advocate for and help special needs pets, who deserve their needed medical care. Every companion animals deserves their chance at life.

Argyle's story illustrates a lot of the work we do at the BUB Fund. Caring for special needs pets requires extra time, care, resources and education, but we know they're worth it. My belief is that how we are for those among us, both pets and people, who are in the greatest need, is ongoing invitation and opportunity to strengthen our communities: https://lnkd.in/gNri6dcv

Sharing just a few of our most recent cases at the BUB Fund; if you want to support them or our work in general, you can donate here: https://lnkd.in/gsMVBVaz Sebastian: Last June, Sebastian was found with a harness so deeply embedded that it covered half his chest and armpit. Despite numerous treatments—from steroids to laser therapy—his wounds repeatedly reopen, leading to infections. Recently, our vet recommended amputation as a necessary step to remove necrotic tissue and help him finally heal. This surgery is complex and finding a vet willing to undertake it has been challenging. Wheezy: Wheezy was rescued from a riverside, battling a rare lung parasite from ingesting crayfish or crab. After extensive treatments, including oxygen therapy and antiparasitics, her condition is stabilizing, but her care costs have reached about $3,500, and her lungs still need time to heal fully. Journey: Journey, abandoned at an apartment complex, has faced a rough path. Initially struggling with an autoimmune disease affecting her GI tract and ears, she was briefly stable on steroids until diagnosed with diabetes, which meant stopping the steroids that kept her comfortable. Now, we are trying a non-steroid treatment hoping it can manage her symptoms without worsening her diabetes. Time is critical for her. Our goal in sharing these cases is to normalize the care needed for special needs pets, who are still often euthanized due to cost of care, even when their prognosis is good. In time, we're hopeful for more equitable and accessible care for all companion animals and the folks who love and care for them.

Cucumber is a great example of what work we support. A pillar of our work is access to care. Special needs pets are often the most difficult to care for and the most expensive to care for, but their lives have value and they are deserving of care and support. By caring for some of the hardest cases, we're able to bring a spotlight to the types of cases we see in our work and begin to normalize special needs care. An overarching goal of our work to come up with more accessible, equitable solutions that incorporate a disability justice framework that is inclusive to both pets and people.

Special Needs Pet Spotlight: Cucumber Cucumber had a peritoneopericardial diaphragmatic hernia (PPDH) – a congenital condition where the diaphragm has a hole that connects up to the pericardial sac around the heart. This communication between the abdomen and the chest allows organs to slip up through the hole which had resulted in his liver ending up next to his heart, between his lungs. It required surgical repair to put everything back where it belongs and close up the hole in the diaphragm. On his x-rays it looks like he has an enlarged heart, but it’s actually the liver and the heart squeezed in next to each other in his chest. We first discovered his condition on an x-ray when checking him and his siblings out for pneumonia. His surgery was delayed because he was then recovering from both pneumonia and ringworm, so it’s been a journey. The cost of Cucumber's care was $5,000. He's currently recovering well with his foster. At the BUB Fund we aim to bring more dialogue around special needs pets and the cost of care not only for individuals, but shelters and rescues. More equitable solutions are needed to ensure special needs pets are able to access needed care. We're hopeful that through increased dialogue about special needs pets we'll be able to continue to transform the landscape for them. Community Love Initiative in action! A great example of communities working together from a few months ago. Thanks to Shahar Fearing and Marilou Chanrasmi for helping bring this initiative to life. We'll continue to highlight this work in partnership with Four Winds Connections so stay tuned.
I am grateful to walk alongside my dear friend Shahar Fearing in the creation of a new non-profit, Four Winds Canine Connections (https://lnkd.in/gPnbsW56). We are grateful for the beautiful collaboration with Anishinaabe And Awesiinyag, Michelle (who helped us secure straw), Rick Haaland of Leech Lake Tribal Police Department and Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe - Aanjibimaadizing to plan and host the dog house building event at Mille Lacs reservation. In the morning, Rick Haaland taught youth how to turn barrels into dog shelters and in a couple hours we had built 36 dog houses which will be delivered to community members along with straw. Then in the afternoon Shahar Fearing led a dog training/understanding dog body language session and was supported by service dog Snickers. It was an amazing day for all. We look forward to future collaborations. Many thanks to Frances Curran Foundation and to Lil Bub for your support that made this event possible. #doghousebuilding #communityengagement #trustedpartners #youthempowerment

At the BUB Fund we work at the intersectional points of animal welfare. Land preservation and access to green space are animal welfare issues, for both people and animals. You can read or listen to our work with Sycamore Land Trust below.

At the BUB Fund we work at the intersectional points of animal welfare. Land preservation and access to green space are animal welfare issues, for both people and animals. We support the work of the Sycamore Land Trust, whose mission is to preserve the beauty, health, and diversity of southern Indiana’s natural landscape through strategic land conservation and environmental education. Sycamore Land Trust wants you to know more about the wildlife communities that depend on the land they protect. In 2021, they set up 15 motion-triggered wildlife cameras at locations they know are frequented by animals. So far, they’ve recorded more than 50 animal species and are keeping an inventory of what they see. This will give them a baseline to measure the success of their large-scale wetland restoration and native planting projects. It will also help guide their stewardship plans for these nature preserves to benefit threatened and endangered species. One of the species caught on their trail cams – and this episodes’s featured animal – is the coyote. Coyotes are native to Indiana and are often called prairie wolves. Before the European settlement of Indiana, coyotes were primarily restricted to Prairie regions of the state. But today, coyotes are found throughout Indiana, including in urban areas. If you’d like to see coyotes in their natural habitat here in Indiana, just visit Sycamore Land Trust trail cams. You can also visit one of the many preserves or trails Sycamore Land Trust maintains that are free to the public. While the impacts of climate change seem to be increasing, people are coming together in great numbers to solve the problems we face. Land conservation is a vital part of this response, because protecting nature is one of the best ways to ensure a healthy climate. Land conservation projects that are strategic about the types of habitats they protect can have tremendous impacts, such as: clean water, healthy soil for farming, increased biodiversity (which strengthens ecosystems), more habitat options for endangered and protected species, healthy native plants for pollinators (on which our crops depend), clean air from mature forests, and balanced ecosystems free from the effects of invasive species. You can listen to our short radio episode on this topic here; produced in partnership with Christine Brackenhoff: https://lnkd.in/eGyxxZcm

Another great example of our collaborative Community Love initiative in partnership with Four Winds Connections. Thanks to Marilou Chanrasmi and Shahar Fearing and our continued work together. So often, costs associated with caring for a companion animal can separate them from their family. Community Love addresses this issue by helping folks care for their companion animals and keep them at home.
Niiwsi needed to get his vaccinations in order for him to be able to move into a new apartment with his mom. We are grateful to be able to provide a little support to a family who clearly loves this handsome boy so much. The WellBeing Fund within our Community Love Initiative allows us to provide financial support to community members and their pets for veterinary care and dog training. Thank you for trusting us and our partners.
