Having hosted a great #LTC100 this week in Salt Lake City, here are a few observations I've made that give me reason for optimism for the skilled nursing sector. Quality. The headwinds we face are real, including an ongoing insistence that we raise our game in quality. But there already ARE many high-quality skilled nursing providers, despite what over-zealous, under-trained surveyors report. Instead of bemoaning the scrutiny we face from CMS, I see a big return in the coming years for those who choose to double-down on quality. ... If it's not already, quality should be the underpinning of every SNF culture. Right now, there's a little too much lip service in this realm. A true commitment to quality means you have to live it, you have to breathe it, and you have to back it up. Respect. There is a strong appetite across the provider community to shift the nursing home narrative toward the positive. But if we want more respect, we're going to have to earn more respect. We're going to have to pro-actively work for it. AHCA and Leading Age are foundational to this effort. But provider CEOs individually must get more involved. Period. More presence at state capitols and DC. More donations to legislators. More mobilization of the workforce. We all have to do more to proselytize the virtue of skilled nursing. Innovation. Adverse operating conditions always bring about innovation, and we're likely to see a lot more of both in the coming years. But what we saw this week at LTC 100 was a testament to the fact that many in the skilled nursing space are already on the leading edge of innovation. We saw innovative models of care, innovative reimbursement concepts, innovative uses of technology, and innovative forms of collaboration. There's good reason to believe the future of SNFs is going look a lot different than the past. Our ability to innovate (ie, "think different") will no longer be a luxury, it will be a necessity. As for the role of LTC 100, we continue to believe that we have an exceptional platform to help promote these and other SNF values going forward. So thank you to all LTC 100 attendees. And thank you to Salt Lake City. It was a 'Grand' event all around.
