STAFF SPOTLIGHT 🌟 Meet Steven Nevarez, social studies teacher at Lincoln Northeast High School. He became a teacher because he wanted to have the same positive impact on students that his high school teachers had on him. Learn more about Steven in his Q&A below.  “Mr. Nevarez gets along with students so well. He helps each student learn in the way that works best for them and figures out how to incorporate that teaching style into the quizzes and tests. He is my favorite teacher.” - Emma, Lincoln Northeast High School student.  How long have you worked for LPS? This is my fourth year teaching at Northeast! What inspired you to become part of the education field at LPS? Going into my freshman year of college, I had no intention whatsoever of being a teacher. I was actually a biochemistry major on a pre-med track that first semester, but all it took was about two weeks of "Calculus 3" for me to realize it was time to re-evaluate my life choices. The one thing I knew for sure was that I wanted a career that would allow me to have a direct and positive impact on my community. So, after a conversation with my parents, they told me to take a week to reflect on the adults in my life that had a positive impact on me growing up.  The thing I remember most about my high school social studies teachers is that they made each and every student in their rooms feel like they belonged in their classrooms. These were the teachers I thought did the best forming meaningful relationships with their students and in turn, created a truly great environment for learning to occur. It was after this realization that I decided to start down the path of becoming a social studies teacher. What has been your favorite part of working here? What aspect of your job do you find most rewarding? My favorite part about my job is when I am actually in the middle of a lesson with students in my room, this part never feels like work. Did you attend LPS as a student? If so, which school(s)? If not, where are you from? I grew up in Omaha. I graduated from Burke High School in 2017. What path did you take after completing your formal education? After graduating from Burke, I attended the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and graduated in the spring of 2021. During that final spring semester, I student taught at Lincoln Northeast, and I've been a part of the LNE family ever since! What do you enjoy most about the Lincoln community? I would say how friendly and welcoming everyone can be! I enjoy both riding my bike and going on walks on the different bike trails all through town and people are always smiling, waving or saying hello! Share a shout out to a teacher who impacted your life. 1. Mr. William Deardoff my AP Human Geography teacher. 2. Mr. Hakan Armagan, my AP Physics teacher. 3. Mr. Jeff Brooks, my cooperating teacher during my student teaching at Northeast. https://lnkd.in/gstXUvKK

STAFF SPOTLIGHT 🌟 Meet Anna McVay, P.E. teacher at Mickle Middle School and proud LPS alum. She’s creating positive, lifelong habits in her students. Her passion for education is rooted in her own impactful academic experiences. Read her Q&A below.  “Ms. McVay makes all students feel included, especially in the weight room. She takes matters seriously when it comes down to student-to-student conflicts and never ignores the smallest incidents of bullying. She is joyful but serious. She is very sweet and cares for all of her students. I believe all students and staff would agree with me that Ms. McVay truly cares for the mental and physical needs of her students.” - Kim Anthony, teacher at Northwest High School.  In a few sentences, briefly describe your role at LPS. I'm a health/P.E./strength teacher at Mickle Middle School. I've been fortunate enough to help create and build LPS' Strength, Movement & Mobility middle school program that was founded in 2023. How long have you worked for LPS? Fourteen years -- Lincoln Southwest (1), Schoo (2), Mickle (11). What inspired you to become part of the education field at LPS? I am a proud product of LPS (Brownell, Mickle, Lincoln Northeast) where both my academic and extracurricular experiences helped create a positive 13 years of education. I was fortunate to have powerful and influential teachers and coaches in those 13 years who taught me lifelong lessons and habits. What has been your favorite part of working here? What aspect of your job do you find most rewarding? My favorite part of my job is having students experience success at something and seeing the empowerment it brings to them. I love being a part of the process of them making the connection between hard work/resiliency, achievement and the pride they get to feel as a result of those achievements. What do you enjoy most about working with a therapy dog at school? I enjoy having Juice (and other therapy dogs) at school because he is great for starting and initiating an interaction between people.  When students come to say hi or to pet him, a conversation naturally follows. Did you attend LPS as a student? If so, which school(s)? If not, where are you from? Yes -- Brownell, Mickle and Lincoln Northeast. What path did you take after completing your formal education? I attended Nebraska Wesleyan University. What do you enjoy most about the Lincoln community? What I love most about the northeast Lincoln community is how deep the roots are here. What is your favorite childhood book or a book that has influenced your life positively? “Atomic Habits” by James Clear. Share a shout out to a former teacher who impacted your life. Mrs. Karla Tinius, my third grade teacher at Brownell. https://lnkd.in/gP_vsBuu

STAFF SPOTLIGHT 🌟 Meet Brianna Knoell, English teacher at Lincoln Standing Bear High School. From teaching English to leading yearbook and speech programs, she’s shaping the future at Lincoln Standing Bear High. Learn more about Brianna in her Q&A below. “Brianna is a very strong instructor and has been very successful in engaging her students and helping to grow their reading and writing skills. However, the real reason for this nomination comes from how much extra Brianna has done on top of the teacher role. Brianna spearheaded Standing Bear's first-ever yearbook. Along with that, Brianna worked with our first-ever speech participants and spent countless hours after school and on Saturdays working with them to improve as the season went along. Brianna has been an amazing addition to our building, and we're lucky to have her!” Brandon Schuman, English department chair at Standing Bear High School.  How long have you worked for LPS? This will be my second year teaching, but I was a sub for two years before I became a teacher.  What inspired you to become part of the education field at LPS? My mom is an elementary teacher in LPS so I grew up helping in her classroom. I knew early on in my life that I wanted to be a teacher and I loved everything LPS had to offer, so I decided to stay home and begin my career here! What has been your favorite part of working here? What aspect of your job do you find most rewarding? It probably sounds cliche, but it really is the students. I’ve met and worked with so many incredible students in my time at LPS, even as a sub. As a teacher now, it is rewarding to build those relationships with my students and watch them really come into their own as they begin high school. Did you attend LPS as a student? If so, which school(s)? If not, where are you from? I went to Zeman Elementary School, Pound Middle School and Southeast High School. What path did you take after completing your formal education? After high school, I attended Northwest Missouri State for a year before transferring to UNL where I got my bachelor’s degree. What do you enjoy most about the Lincoln community? I love how there is so much to do in Lincoln but yet it feels like a tight-knit community. What is your favorite childhood book or a book that has influenced your life positively? Like many freshmen, I read “The Odyssey” in ninth grade. Not only did I find it to be a cool adventure story,“The Odyssey” was also the first piece of literature I really had to work at to understand, and I really liked the challenge it brought me. Trying to dissect the story is what made me want to be an English teacher. Share a shout out to a former teacher who impacted your life. It’s hard to pick just one, but Johnna Graff would have to be my choice. She made her classroom so fun and inviting, yet had high expectations for all students. I try to emulate her as much as I can in my own classroom! #LPSProud https://lnkd.in/eRhMzWap

How long have you worked for LPS? I will be starting my 20th year at LPS. What inspired you to become part of the education field at LPS? I enjoyed the series and I loved reading and discussing the books with my kids. Share a shout out to a former teacher who impacted your life.
