Celebrating Our Custodians: The Unsung Heroes of Linden Public Schools In every corner of our schools, from the hallways to the classrooms, custodians quietly go about their day ensuring our students and staff have a clean, safe, and welcoming environment. On this National Custodian Day, we shine a well-deserved spotlight on these often overlooked members of our school community who play an indispensable role in the daily operations of Linden Public Schools. Beyond just cleaning, our custodians are caretakers who support every aspect of school life. Whether preparing classrooms for the start of the day, ensuring hallways and cafeterias are spotless, or stepping in at a moment’s notice to handle unforeseen emergencies, custodians contribute significantly to maintaining the environment that helps our students thrive. More than Maintenance: True Stewards of Our Schools "Our custodians do so much more than just maintain our facilities; they build a positive atmosphere for learning," said Superintendent Atiya Perkins. "Their contributions often go unnoticed, but their dedication and hard work are foundational to the success of every day in our schools." The district is taking this opportunity to express its gratitude by recognizing the extraordinary efforts of our custodial team, who not only keep our schools immaculate but also play a vital role in ensuring a safe and healthy environment for our entire community. A Day of Gratitude Today, schools across the district are showing appreciation for their custodial staff with various tokens of gratitude — from heartfelt thank-you notes from students to small celebrations hosted by staff and administrators. "Our custodians are part of the backbone of our schools. We simply couldn't function without them," said Principal Charles Koonce of Linden High School. On this National Custodian Day, we acknowledge the essential work of these unsung heroes and remind our community of their tremendous impact. While their contributions may often be behind the scenes, their importance is at the forefront of everything we achieve as a district. Thank you, custodians, for your unwavering commitment to our schools and our students.

𝐋𝐈𝐍𝐃𝐄𝐍 𝐏𝐔𝐁𝐋𝐈𝐂 𝐒𝐂𝐇𝐎𝐎𝐋𝐒, 𝐍𝐉 -- At precisely 8:46 a.m. on September 11, 2024, a solemn silence descended upon School No. 8. Standing outside on the school's turfed playground, with heads bowed and miniature American flags clutched tightly in their hands, the elementary students—most of whom were not yet born when the world was forever changed—stood alongside staff, district leaders, and local officials who had gathered to honor the lives lost during the September 11 attacks, 23 years ago. In that still moment, the weight of history was deeply felt as the young faces reflected on a tragedy, they had only heard about but were now part of commemorating. "It's hard to believe it has been 23 years already," Derek Armstead Mayor of Linden told the gathering. "Many of you weren't even born when it happened, but it's important that we all understand the significance of this day because it changed the world forever." Community-wide Reflection Mayor Armstead was joined by Superintendent Atiya Y. Perkins, School No. 8 Principal Michelle Rodriguez, teachers, staff, and school board member Lymari Cintron as similar moments of reflection unfolded across other schools in the district, in public spaces, and even in homes. The Linden community came together in solidarity to remember the nearly 3,000 lives lost in the deadliest terrorist attack in U.S. history. In hushed silence, School Social Worker Ann-Marie Spricigo reminded them of the day's importance. "Patriot Day 2024, also referred to as 9/11, is a day dedicated to remembering and paying tribute to the 2,977 people killed and the numerous others who were injured during the terrorist attacks," Rodriguez said. "We honor all families, EMTs, police officers, firefighters, businesses, volunteers, and the U.S. military who made the ultimate sacrifice to protect and serve."

Summer School Success: Engaging Minds and Growing Skills! Summer school has ended! The district’s Traditional Summer School (TSS), held across all elementary schools, wrapped up after a nearly two-month run. This program ensured students were enriched and well-prepared for the upcoming academic year. The Middle School and High School also hosted a Summer Bridge program and Credit Recovery program. Here is a Spotlight on School No. 1’s TSS: At School No. 1, academic and social-emotional learning (SEL) activities were a highlight of the summer program, keeping students engaged and inspired throughout the break. Panagiota “Penny” Vitroulis, a 7th-grade math teacher, shared that the activities were not only engaging but also inspiring for students. • Incoming 3rd Graders: Practiced fractions with the interactive game “Fill the Hexagon,” using polygons such as triangles, trapezoids, rhombi, and hexagons on cover mats. • Incoming 5th Graders: Read “Because of Winn-Dixie” and watched the movie, followed by a discussion on the differences between the two. They celebrated with a themed party featuring Dump Punch, pickles, egg salad sandwiches, and Litmus Lozenges, replicating the food from the book. • SEL Activities: Students enjoyed visiting the school garden, picking a variety of vegetables and leafy greens, including cherry tomatoes, squash, kale, and basil. All Traditional Summer School programs provided a comprehensive mix of academic preparation and hands-on activities, ensuring students are ready for the new school year. A huge thanks to all the dedicated teachers and staff who made this summer a success! #SummerSchoolSuccess #EngagingLearning #LindenPublicSchools #InspiringStudents #SELActivities #ReadyForNextGrade
