Linden, we need ALL PINK ON DECK!!! On Wednesday, October 30th, our varsity, J.V. and freshman girls volleyball teams will compete against Elizabeth to raise money to support a great cause. Funds raised will be sent to the Rutgers Cancer Institute Breast Cancer Division. A Night at Gatsby’s: Homecoming Dance Homecoming week was filled with excitement and laughter, but A Night at Gatsby’s homecoming dance became the crown jewel for our juniors and seniors. This magical evening will remain a cherished memory for years to come. Gran Centurion Saves the Night – Thanks to Our Leaders! When the LHS gym construction put the dance venue in jeopardy, it was Senior Class President Sheyla Caly who took the initiative and made magic happen. Sheyla contacted the Gran Centurion, worked out all the details, and ensured the event would go off without a hitch—all before the adults even had to step in! Because of her leadership, and the support of the Gran Centurion, the night was a resounding success. The dance floor pulsed with energy as DJ Jamal kept the music pumping and students captured every moment with flashing camera phones. Laughter and smiles were everywhere as friends enjoyed a delicious buffet, sharing this unforgettable evening together. Thanks to the teamwork of our Senior Class Officers—President Sheyla Caly, VP Claudia Buzynski, Secretary Mackenzie Salazar, and Treasurer Carlos Cubillos—and the guidance of Senior Advisors Lakhia Carter-Blocker, James Orth, and Stefanny Quintero, A Night at Gatsby’s truly came to life. The Perfect Prelude to Victory But the celebration didn’t end there! Just two days later, the Linden Tigers roared to victory, defeating Carteret 28-18 in the Homecoming football game. The excitement and energy from the dance carried right onto the field, sealing the perfect Homecoming week. With the buzz still in the air, we look back and celebrate a week that brought us together—and a Night at Gatsby’s that will be remembered for years to come

Standing at just five feet tall, Sheyla may be small in stature, but her voice carries tremendous weight—both in her role as battalion commander of the school’s ROTC program and now as the student advocate on the board. "I’m very excited to be working on the Board of Education," Sheyla says, her smile reflecting both her excitement and sense of responsibility. Her journey to this position was driven by her determination to address a gap she noticed early in her high school career. "My freshman year, there wasn’t a lot done with my grade," she recalls. "So, my sophomore year, I decided to take the initiative and run for class president." Her decision to step up paid off, leading to three consecutive terms as class president and now a position on the Board of Education, where she advocates for the voices of more than 6,600 students across the district. For Sheyla, the sky is the limit. As De La Cruz reminded her, "You’re going to go places." And with her determination and passion for leadership, it’s clear that Sheyla is just getting started.

Linden Public Schools Breast Cancer Walk Raises Nearly $3,000 in a Powerful Display of Unity, Hope, and Resilience On a breezy, cool, yet sunny fall morning, Tiger Stadium in Linden was awash in shades of pink as more than 270 participants gathered for the annual Linden Public Schools Breast Cancer Awareness Walk. Under the crisp October sky on Saturday, October 12, survivors, caregivers, school staff, elected officials, and community activists came together in a powerful show of unity, raising nearly $3,000 for the Susan G. Komen Foundation and spreading hope in the ongoing fight against breast cancer. “The walk symbolized the strength and unity of the Linden community, which came together to raise awareness and support in the ongoing fight against breast cancer,” said Superintendent Atiya Y. Perkins. Participants, donning bright pink T-shirts emblazoned with “Every Step Closer to a CURE,” eagerly awaited the walk’s start. Assistant Superintendent Annabel Louis opened the 2024 fundraiser by expressing her delight at the overwhelming turnout, which far exceeded expectations. “It exceeded my expectations,” Louis said. “Beyond the beautiful weather, having approximately 270 people register for such an important and meaningful cause is truly worth celebrating. This wasn’t just for Linden Public Schools—seeing community members, parents, elected officials, and city activists come out was wonderful.” With nearly $3,000 raised and more funds expected throughout October, the Linden Public Schools Breast Cancer Awareness Walk was a resounding success. Donations will continue, with the final total to be announced on social media at the end of the month. Reflecting on the event, Louis summed up the spirit of the day: “It was a community-wide event, and that’s what made it so special. This cause is important to everyone here, and together, we’re making a difference.” As Kathales put it, “We can do anything when we stand together.”

Celebrating Our Custodians: The Unsung Heroes of Linden Public Schools In every corner of our schools, from the hallways to the classrooms, custodians quietly go about their day ensuring our students and staff have a clean, safe, and welcoming environment. On this National Custodian Day, we shine a well-deserved spotlight on these often overlooked members of our school community who play an indispensable role in the daily operations of Linden Public Schools. Beyond just cleaning, our custodians are caretakers who support every aspect of school life. Whether preparing classrooms for the start of the day, ensuring hallways and cafeterias are spotless, or stepping in at a moment’s notice to handle unforeseen emergencies, custodians contribute significantly to maintaining the environment that helps our students thrive. More than Maintenance: True Stewards of Our Schools "Our custodians do so much more than just maintain our facilities; they build a positive atmosphere for learning," said Superintendent Atiya Perkins. "Their contributions often go unnoticed, but their dedication and hard work are foundational to the success of every day in our schools." The district is taking this opportunity to express its gratitude by recognizing the extraordinary efforts of our custodial team, who not only keep our schools immaculate but also play a vital role in ensuring a safe and healthy environment for our entire community. A Day of Gratitude Today, schools across the district are showing appreciation for their custodial staff with various tokens of gratitude — from heartfelt thank-you notes from students to small celebrations hosted by staff and administrators. "Our custodians are part of the backbone of our schools. We simply couldn't function without them," said Principal Charles Koonce of Linden High School. On this National Custodian Day, we acknowledge the essential work of these unsung heroes and remind our community of their tremendous impact. While their contributions may often be behind the scenes, their importance is at the forefront of everything we achieve as a district. Thank you, custodians, for your unwavering commitment to our schools and our students.

𝐋𝐈𝐍𝐃𝐄𝐍 𝐏𝐔𝐁𝐋𝐈𝐂 𝐒𝐂𝐇𝐎𝐎𝐋𝐒, 𝐍𝐉 -- At precisely 8:46 a.m. on September 11, 2024, a solemn silence descended upon School No. 8. Standing outside on the school's turfed playground, with heads bowed and miniature American flags clutched tightly in their hands, the elementary students—most of whom were not yet born when the world was forever changed—stood alongside staff, district leaders, and local officials who had gathered to honor the lives lost during the September 11 attacks, 23 years ago. In that still moment, the weight of history was deeply felt as the young faces reflected on a tragedy, they had only heard about but were now part of commemorating. "It's hard to believe it has been 23 years already," Derek Armstead Mayor of Linden told the gathering. "Many of you weren't even born when it happened, but it's important that we all understand the significance of this day because it changed the world forever." Community-wide Reflection Mayor Armstead was joined by Superintendent Atiya Y. Perkins, School No. 8 Principal Michelle Rodriguez, teachers, staff, and school board member Lymari Cintron as similar moments of reflection unfolded across other schools in the district, in public spaces, and even in homes. The Linden community came together in solidarity to remember the nearly 3,000 lives lost in the deadliest terrorist attack in U.S. history. In hushed silence, School Social Worker Ann-Marie Spricigo reminded them of the day's importance. "Patriot Day 2024, also referred to as 9/11, is a day dedicated to remembering and paying tribute to the 2,977 people killed and the numerous others who were injured during the terrorist attacks," Rodriguez said. "We honor all families, EMTs, police officers, firefighters, businesses, volunteers, and the U.S. military who made the ultimate sacrifice to protect and serve."
