As Hispanic Heritage Month begins (from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15 in the US), it’s the perfect time to learn more about all the various cultures that fall under the term “Hispanic” as well as all the different ways to celebrate these different cultures. And shoutout to Liza Colón-Zayas for just earlier this week becoming the first Latina actress (who is also Hispanic) to win an Emmy for Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series! This is particularly significant as Latines have won only 10 Emmy awards across the organization’s 76 years. There are so many beautiful cultures to celebrate during Hispanic Heritage Month, but as a refresher, in the context of identity “Hispanic” describes people who come from a primarily Spanish-speaking country like Spain, and all the nations that Spain colonized. Many of these countries are in Central and South America, although notably not Brazil who was colonized by Portugal. Also, even though many Hispanics are also Latine, the terms are not interchangeable – Latine/Latinx/Latino all refer to people from Latin America. This focuses more on geography and shared cultural heritage rather than languages spoken. And the gender-neutral “Latine” was created by queer and trans Spanish speakers who wanted to replace the gendered “Latino” and “Latina.” “Latinx” is also used for this purpose but has not been as well-received. Hispanic Heritage Month also starts on September 15th in the US to honor the independence of Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua which all gained their independence on that date. Mexico, Chile and Belize all have their independence days following shortly after on September 16th, 18th and 21st, respectively. Hispanic Heritage Month started in California in the 1960s and was recognized first as National Hispanic Heritage Week on a federal level in 1968. It officially became extended to a month on August 17, 1988. In Canada, the whole month of October is Latin American Heritage Month which was officially proclaimed on a federal level in 2018. Some provinces like Ontario have recognized October as Hispanic Heritage Month since 2015. Hispanics make up just 3% of the population in Canada, compared to over 19% in the US. However, the number of people identifying as Latin American in Canada increased by almost 50% from 2016 to 2021. You can learn even more about Hispanic Heritage Month by reading the article below as well as get some great ideas for different ways to celebrate. And if you want to use this as an excuse to go get some delicious food from a local Hispanic restaurant, go for it! Supporting local Hispanic shops and restaurants is one of the many great ways to celebrate. Happy Hispanic Heritage Month! https://lnkd.in/e4vZXdq7
