SEO For Software Companies That Brings Customers, Not Just Traffic

If your SEO isn't making you money, the problem isn’t SEO. The problem is you're doing it wrong. There are so many different tactics and strategies to take when it comes to SEO. And if it's not making you money, that means you've picked the wrong one for your business. Take a step back, see the activities you've been doing, evaluate them objectively and see if there's any reason they should be leading to revenue. A client we work with in the data security space came to us after having worked with a different SEO agency that encouraged them to create a glossary section on their website (top of funnel content). Publishing top of funnel content can get you a bunch of traffic. These SEO agencies that worked with this client “tricked” them into caring more about vanity numbers (traffic), than their bottom line. Traffic increased, so the SEO technically did their job. But it was useless traffic. This company then came to us very wary of SEO agencies, because there was more traffic but no new revenue. Our team is always astounded that anyone would actually take your money for that sort of tactic. That’s 2010 SEO. Don't do that anymore. We only care about your bottom line. And so for these two companies, we turned everything around. The first thing we did was to work on their product pages. if you’re getting traffic but your website isn't making you money, you probably have bad product pages. You need to work on getting those to rank on page one, and there's a really specific strategy to doing so. Step 1: Make sure the keywords you're thinking of have a product or purchase intent. So keyword research is step one. Figure out what people are calling your product when they are in a mindset to buy, and then optimize your product page around that. Plain and simple. Step 2: Build out your authority in that space, if you haven't already. If that's something you're lacking, you’ll need to do a little bit of top of funnel SEO in order to support your product pages. Step 3: Build links to those pages to really skyrocket the results. Once we have those product pages optimized, building links to them means you're going to shoot to the top.

How we use chatGPT to learn the exact pain points that prompted our SEO clients to reach out to us (if you don't know exactly why clients are signing up with you, you can't market effectively). 1 - Have the data. We have a detailed onboarding form that includes questions such as "what prompted you to reach out to us?" and "why couldn't you just do this yourselves? 2 - Drop the following prompt into ChatGPT (tailored to your niche): "I run an [SEO agency], and I have a detailed onboarding form for every client we’ve ever worked with. I will upload the export of this form. Your goal is to identify the key pain points that prompted clients to reach out to us and want to work with us. Please rank them in order of prevalence, and describe each in detail. Also please explain why they couldn’t just do this themselves." 3 - Now you know your value proposition in the eyes of your clients, and the pain points that caused them to reach out to you. Use this in all your marketing, on your website, in your sales decks, etc. etc. (Shoutout to ZenPilot Jakub Grajcar Gray MacKenzie for the awesome vid!)

On episode 2 of the Search and Revenue Series, Mike Adams, founder of Grain, shares a major learning moment as it relates to marketing: "In the world of product-first businesses, mastering product marketing is crucial. It's a different game compared to traditional marketing. Even with a well-defined Ideal Customer Profile (ICP) and market, product marketing is vital to stand out. My key takeaway? Novelty alone won't cut it. You need to understand first principles and then build effective playbooks and processes." 📈 Understand the importance of product marketing and how to move beyond just "the novelty". The real challenge is in deep understanding and strategic execution. To Gate... or Not to Gate? 🤔 In B2B marketing, the decision to gate or ungate content often sparks discussion. Gated content is valuable for lead generation, helping you capture, qualify, nurture, and personalize leads. On the flip side, ungating content can help rapidly increase brand awareness by removing barriers and allowing users free access to your resources. In episode 3 of The Search and Revenue Series, Amanda Schnieders from Chronus mentions that ungating content may work for you in ways you may not have expected. By ungating, you're not only spreading awareness but also allowing the content itself to shine, providing value upfront and creating opportunities for deeper connections with your audience. Linkflow's Daniel Horning shares his two cents on engaging high-consideration persona groups with Traci Ruether. For many B2B companies, it's not just about that "first search" leading to a call or contract. Instead, it's about building brand awareness and standing out in crowded digital spaces. With users increasingly staying within search results or on social platforms, the quality of your content matters more than ever. Here are some things to consider: ✅ Focus on High-Quality Content: When your audience stays on search results or social platforms, your content needs to grab their attention and convey value immediately. ✅ Build Trust Over Time: High-consideration personas require multiple touchpoints before they engage. Consistent, informative, and engaging content is key. ✅ Leverage Multi-Channel Strategies: Don’t rely solely on one platform. Diversify your efforts across various channels to maintain visibility and reach. Tune in to the episode to learn more about effective strategies for engaging and driving brand awareness in the B2B space. 🎧 Full episode: https://lnkd.in/ewJXvz6B #B2BMarketing #SaaS #BrandAwareness #DigitalMarketing #ContentStrategy #SearchAndRevenue

🎉 Episode #2 of the Search and Revenue Series is here! Daniel Horning from Linkflow chats with Mike Adams the founder of Grain, to delve into the incredible journey of a company making waves in AI-driven note-taking and sales analytics. 🌊 Mike's story is one of tech serendipity and relentless innovation. Growing up in Utah, Mike moved to the Bay Area after graduating with a degree in economics. He stumbled into the tech world and never looked back! 🚀 His entrepreneurial spirit first led him to co-found a couple of education companies before he ventured into AI with Grain. The company’s name has a cool backstory. It was inspired by an episode of Black Mirror featuring a product called "Harvest Grain" (IYKYK 😁 ). Mike was captivated by the 'grain' concept, and thus, Grain was born. What makes Grain truly stand out is its ability to transform ordinary Zoom calls into treasure troves of data. 📈 The company first caught users' attention with a novel feature that timestamped notes on Zoom recordings—a feature that was the first of its kind in the market when it launched in 2019. But Mike didn’t stop there! Seeing untapped potential in sales analytics, Grain evolved to provide deep insights that make sales teams smarter and more efficient with every call. It’s a beautiful mix of cutting-edge tech and human-centric design, proving that even the most futuristic ideas can have humble (or slightly dystopian) beginnings. Next time you're on a Zoom call, remember your conversation could be part of a game-changing data journey—all thanks to a little inspo from a dystopian series. 😉 Watch the full episode here: https://bit.ly/3YYAL6m #AI #SalesAnalytics #Innovation #TechJourney #SearchAndRevenueSeries
