Our mission is to create a fully literate, career-ready Greater Hartford.
About us
Literacy Volunteers of Greater Hartford is a private non-profit organization that has provided adult literacy services to the Greater Hartford community since 1972. Annually, we now provide reading, English, and other basic skills education to over 900 adults from 20 towns throughout our region. The hard work of over 200 committed and trained volunteers is what drives this organization. Our mission is to build a stronger, more resilient Greater Hartford by creating a community of fully literate adults. We are an affiliate of ProLiteracy Worldwide and a United Way partner agency that relies on public and private support to expand our reach and meet the vast need for literacy services.

Jody has always been involved in education in one way or another. At the start of her career, she worked as a Special Education teacher in Maine. When she moved to Connecticut, she became the Special Education Director for several school districts including Hartford and East Hartford, and eventually took a position as Director of Norwich Adult Education. It was in that position that she developed CNA and Manufacturing programs to help students progress in their careers. “My passion was for working with the students and seeing what they were doing in their lives,” Jody shares. “It was so moving to go to graduation every year and see their accomplishments. It was the most fabulous experience.” When she officially retired, Jody tried out a few new hobbies and volunteer experiences before she found her place at LVGH. After flunking a watercolor class, she was encouraged by a friend who wanted to become a tutor with us and she decided to give it a try, too. “I was nervous, because even though I worked in Adult Education, I had never taught an ESOL class before. I didn’t know how organic it would be for me. Helping the students learn English and work towards a better future is so joyful. I am very purpose-driven, and it’s such a gift to be here. My husband says I always come home with such a big smile on my face after I teach.” Jody’s joy is contagious. You will often hear her class laughing and enjoying their time together. Thank you, Jody, for sharing your experience and enthusiasm with our students!
